agreed it's not a silver bullet to just move to ranked choice. But in conjunction with scrapping primaries? Goes a long way IMO.

I think we need to do away with primaries and move toward ranked-choice voting. Parties can exist still, but a ranked-choice setup allows a much more viable place for third parties and hugely mitigates the move-to-extremism we've seen primaries have on the GOP. Already working in some states

used to live amongst a lot of wealthy people, my wife in particular served them in a candy shop and back during a period of proposed tax hikes on the wealthy she regularly heard groans of protest along the lines of "We *only* make $500k a year! It's not like we're rich - why tax us more?"

I once got a tale of woe about some rich person's second or third house being hard to maintain, capped off with something like "you know, whether you're rich or poor, we all have the same struggles. It's no different."

I wanted to slap him silly but simply stared a sec and went back to work.

you may not want to watch it ever. As the creator of the video says himself, the whole enterprise of documenting the symbolic language Lynch uses is antithetical to what Lynch wants for viewers of his work

For myself, I appreciated the video but didn't feel sold on it until about 2/3s through

hands down my favorite show. Even if some of it I have to avert my eyes from. deeply evocative and mysterious - and yet simultaneously directly symbolic, even pedantically so (as explained here: https://youtu.be/7AYnF5hOh...

but we should have socialized medical care for all, shouldn't we? Like every other wealthy nation on earth? Current Medicare for all isn't an end point. Medicare needs also to be strengthened and expanded so that we can do what any sane nation does: care for its citizens.

❤️ Jesus challenged us in so many ways and I think in a special way we need, today, to be more focused on this wish for us: peace. He constantly exhorts us to be at peace.

Nearly as difficult as his exhortations to forgiveness. But also, maybe, nearly as important.

given time, I don't see how any career survives the rapid advancements we're seeing in AI and robotics. The machines will be better than us at literally anything. The only thing left are jobs where we intrinsically value human interaction? Nurses, athletes, political leaders ...

Ah right, that's the big distinction. We only don't allow civil suits pertaining to the president's official duties, while he's still in office. But POTUS can still be sued for his illegal, private conduct

my understanding as well. Though we did explicitly exempt sitting presidents from civil suits, I think? Criminal prosecution of a sitting president is still theoretically possible, if unlikely to happen and contrary to current DOJ guidelines

nice, minimal app icon. Looks great on my phone. Wouldn't mind it being the official site logo too. Does much more what a logo should, imo

Classic simplification, with memorable connotation and, despite its simplicity, is recognizably unique.

Spouty is cute, but more a mascot, not a great logo

it's a little mixed. Some here are absolutist on certain issues and will jump at any opportunity to browbeat others for their insensitivity.

I often just don't speak because 300 character-statements are easy to distort.

Even this statement is potentially liable to backlash.

I'm yet more frightened about explicit plans for overhauling the staffing of our institutions - putting throughout military and government agencies people who swear fealty to Trump, not the constitution. Those are the moves to entrench autocracy, which allow even worse than this list of awfulness

It's sensible to say that you can't trust an AI with [x-task] right now and is generally nuts to say otherwise ... but give it some years. AI will be routinely more competent than humans at every job. We're building the demise of our capitalist economy, and should be planning for its replacement.

I really like the current state of AI - it's a sweet spot as useful tools that can be leveraged by creative individuals to facilitate more rapid writing, programming, designing, researching - but it's not yet taking away all our jobs. Unfortunately, it's going to get much weirder soon.
