I placed a hold for this at the library a while back, and it's available so I'll read The Kite Runner this month as well.

I'm reading Blindness by José Saramago. Not the happiest book but it makes me think about what I take for granted maybe

I'm still rereading Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. I just passed the part where Milkman walks into the barbershop to the news on the radio that Eugene Till was "stomped." 😢

The Kite Runner is a great choice👇🏽 #SpoutibleBannedBookClub
Spoutible Banned Book Club @BannedBookClub
If you want to choose a book not on the list and aren't sure if the book has been challenged/banned, don't worry about it as long as it's similar to other banned books, meaning by or about BBIMP, LGBTQ+, etc.

I will be reading Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini if you'd like to read same. #SBBCMay2024

“When things were very bad his soul just crawled behind his heart and curled up and went to sleep.” Bailey had seen a dead black man pulled from a pond and was consumed by horror. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

I liked this this part, because I think she realized in this moment how important words and poetry can be.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with the shades of deeper meaning.”

Yes, much more structure at their grandmother’s place. There was a predictable daily routine. Living in Chicago seemed to entail less routine. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

The brain abhors blank spaces and will fill in or interpret unfamiliar experiences anchored in any existing knowledge. Children understand disapproval and pleasing adults, so that is how even unpleasant events are framed. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

I prefer modern poetry overall much more than classic poetry. I especially enjoy books written as poetry. Brown Girl Dreaming by Woodson is wonderful.

They had many more opportunities with their parents and more resources. Better schools, clothing, and food. They also seemed to have more respect in general when they weren’t in Stamps.

I read this book years ago. Maya Angelou went through a lot of hard things that she rose above. Not sure if it was this book or another of her writings but she told about telling a friend who joked about homosexuals to leave a social gathering she hosted (to educate him --her party, her rules).

I read it in my mid-30’s. As an abuse survivor I found much to relate to. Also, I lived in Little Rock in 1969-1970 (high school) and learned some eye-opening things about entrenched racism that I was oblivious to as a white teenager. I’ve also learned about racism seeing the book banned in schools.

I re read it for this month's book club and I will likely do it again. It's is beautifully written, poetic and emotionally.

American society defines beauty by white standards. Those with dark skin and natural hair can’t be beautiful unless they try to mimic whites in some way. This marginalizes people. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint
