Beautiful. Good times when the SBBC chooses a book I already read. Remembering when Rebecca Skloot appeared at a talk n book signing at Vromans Bookstore in Pasadena CA when the book first came out and asking her some questions about her interviewing process. Anyway, this book choice is great!!

I was wondering what happened to the nephew...I hope he heeded his uncle's advice and learned to deal with the reality dealt him through love.
Also what Mr. Baldwin would say in 2024
have Americans done better and what's left to do to change the world with love to prevent the #FireNextTime .

This was a good point that the history of humankind has for so long been seen as winners and creating heroes out of that violence
Bill Barr just remined us of that that it's the winners who write the history.
I think Baldwin struggled with this idea of change needs violence to succeed.

It took me a long time of listening to people complain about others to realize that what they were doing was projecting their own fear/self-loathing.
people should put that effort into lifting themselves and thus others up not wallowing in something they see as muck.

Sometimes it's hard to think about how we as ordinary people try and combat some of the big problems in this world...Thinking oh someone "big" has got it...
it's hard to remember that small acts of decency and doing right in our own community is sowing the seeds for the big solutions to take hold.

I found it difficult to read at points as Baldwin's train of thought would meander to different subjects and then come back to a main point.
It was also difficult emotionally as any of these meanderings would require me to set the book down to absorb what was just read and process it.#FireNextTime

I'd rather have more equity, than making people rely on charity, that would be real love and faith.

I blame Daniel Boone 😃

Seriously, for me, American exceptionalism seems bound up in a weird type of patriotism that believes that your country is the best in the world because you were born in it.

I highlighted several quotes, but this is one that I liked that seemed to be about facing reality, learning, transformation, and growth.

“Love takes off the masks we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.”

How can there be American exceptionalism when all of its residents were not allowed to participate? Instead mediocre groups were lauded to the status of exceptional. That created a false identity that crumbles when the playing field is broadened and full participation is encouraged. #FireNextTime

The brutality still exists. Obvious lynchings are replaced by police shootings. "Whites Only" signs are replaced with rules regarding hair styles and other forms of micro aggression.

#SBBC #FireNextTime Yes, it applies. Baldwin is speaking of a black family. A black child who gets “uppity” is still made to pay for that ill-advised challenge, sometimes with their life. Racist power structure don’t like POC challengers.

#SBBC #FireNextTime The brutality lives and breathes in my profession, nursing. POC are ignored, undertreated, and gaslighted with every healthcare encounter. My colleagues are called the N-word, or worse, and subjected to microaggressions. It’s a microcosm.

#SBBC #FireNextTime VERY relevant. The U.S. currently has its collective head up its a** where racism is concerned. This book shows the “Southern Problem” for the national and global problem that it is.

Agreed. We're seeing this play out right before us right now. And while the people who are trying to take our rights aware wouldn't say they're wicked, they're definitely spineless.

I still think they're also wicked.

“... the realization that a civilization is not destroyed by wicked people; it is not necessary that people be wicked but only that they be spineless.” (p. 55)

The book was an unmitigated indictment of racism and Christo-fascism. I would read it again because unfortunately it is STILL extremely relevant. It will make you think, probably will make some angry, but truth is truth. The conversations that emerge are difficult but necessary. #SBBC #FireNextTime

In response to Dréa25.

#SBBC #FireNextTime My mind went immediately to WWII with that quote. Such evil and devastation committed by the spineless. A vein currently being tapped in the U.S. by a certain con man.
