Dina is someone I met recently at a local event and have been talking with online. If you have the money to help her, please do. https://www.gofundme.com/f...

I believe we all should use whatever abilities we have to try to make the world a better place. So I spent three days beading pins to give away to those who promised to write a letter to the editor.

My daughter's grade eight class had to write monologues based on pictures themed around Remembrance day. She chose the only picture that had a female. It was of a male America soldier hugging his flag waving daughter.
We are in Canada. If the teacher used pictures of Ukrainian or Russian soldiers

I have been rewatching Star Trek Deep Space 9 with my teens. The show features discussion about resistance movements and episodes that question actions that trigger retaliatory strikes. When or how much fighting for freedom is justified? When does it just add to suffering?

I'm reading two books right now - one on Jane Austen, and the other called Prequel by Rachel Maddow. The latter is about the history of fascism in America. It's pretty chilling.

I was pleased with the turnout at a protest calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. Speakers talked about their parents and grandparents being forced out of their homes.

I knew the park it was held in tends to be littered with needles, so went early with supplies for cleaning that up.

I live in Ontario. Today I saw someone walking around the downtown wearing a Nazi uniform - tan outfit, swastika armband. I am horrified.

Former homeschooled teen just started public school. He's excited about a contest his design class is participating in. They create designs. Top designs get printed out and put on a quilt for the Harvest Festival. Sounds great. Then he says the designs are supposed to include First Nations symbols

My previously homeschooling daughter wants to go to school this year and plans on wearing masks. It isn't just for Covid protection but emotional security too. So I am sewing her more masks.

This week my obsession is learning about Leonard Cohen. I've read his first novel - The Favourite Game - and am starting to read an autobiography. I have the song Hallelujah running through my head. #SpoutingClassics

I've felt like a zombie all day. I had to take my 18 year old to the hospital super early this morning for a scheduled check-up - it is 6 months since his cancerous tumor was removed and all is well. In some ways it is a simple appointment but in other ways... it drained every last bit of my energy.

I think we have a rodent problem in our yard. Our cats are only let out on leashes, and we're undecided how much to let them hunt the rodents. Sometimes they get them despite our best efforts. Sometimes I think we should let them hunt more to reduce the population. #SpoutingWildlife

My tween daughter was looking at a list of recommended supplies for school. She noticed "sanitary products" and thought "hand sanitizer" while I thought menstruation supplies.

She knows what menstruation supplies are, but covid news has been so much a part of her last three years.

I've been watching stories about the BC wildfires on X. In particular, I've been noting that one story by one couple about a backburn around Celista has been republished over and over. It blames the firemen. This is accompanied occasionally by three or four other copy-pasted things...

One of my hobbies is teaching homeschooling teens about the Bible from a secular academic perspective. I do this through Outschool (which uses zoom) and I am hoping I can get a good number of students to sign up this September.

Reading about the French Revolution. Jacobins believed all good people would agree with them & got frustrated when that didn't happen. "...when the Jacobins concluded that the enemies of the civic good would not change, they also decided that such foes were clearly evil and deserving of no mercy..."

It is weird to slow myself down and examine the French Revolution step by step, not jump straight to the Reign of Terror. There had been no Estates General for 175 years and people didn't know how to have one. That's amazing to really think about.

Reading about the French Revolution and the different subgroups of Jacobins makes me smile. It makes me think about how later historians might attempt to keep straight tension or disagreement between AOC, Bernie Sanders supporters, and Biden supporters. Or between the various different Rep. groups.

This morning I feel very energetic and eager to spend the day reading history. My current topic is the French Revolution and one of the fascinating aspects to it is the question of how people went from advocating freedom of speech and liberty for all to executing so many people.

"Hide one of two warring duelists from view... and the learned feints of the one visible combatant look like the incoherent gyrations of a madman." I read this in a book about the French Revolution, but I'm thinking about how it applies to a lot of modern things.
