I still think the #nfl should devote a section of its record book to the preseason. The 1950s #Rams , for instance, loved to put up a big number in an exhibition game. In this one in 1950, they scored 70 vs. the #colts -- & tried for 77 with a last-second pass. . . .

Which season would you say is more common in #nfl history, a RB gaining 750 yards rushing & 750 receiving or a WR racking up 1,500 receiving yards & 15 TD catches?

750/750

1,500/15

The 1st #nfl QB to throw 20 TD passes & rush for 500 yards in the same season was #Eagles great Randall Cunningham, who did it 4 straight years from 1987 to '90. The #Niners ' Steve Young was next in '92 (25/537).

Never been a big fan of lumping AFL stats in with #nfl stats, especially the pre-Super Bowl AFL. Just curious: How many of the AFL's Top 10 all-time rushers do you think you could name? Here's the list. See how you did. No Hoyle Granger!!! #Raiders #CHARGERS #Broncos

Here's the #Steelers roster for their 1941 opener that ran in that day's Akron Beacon Journal. (They played the #Rams at the Rubber Bowl.) The head coach listed at the bottom is "Matty Bell." No, that was the famous coach at SMU. The Pittsburgh coach was Bert Bell, future HOFer.

It will never cease to amaze me that Washington's Wayne Millner had 160 yards receiving in the 1937 #nfl title game -- with Sammy Baugh on the slingin' end -- & his total still ranks 7th all time in an NFL championship game or Super Bowl. #Commanders #49ers #Rams #Steelers #colts

Who Am I? I'm the only person to coach a team to the #nfl championship game or Super Bowl who also once held a championship game or Super Bowl record as a player. (I'm looking for some performance thing, not Most Games Played or something.)

Was talking about Harold Jackson the other day. He's on this short list of #nfl /AFL receivers with 200 yards & 4 TDs in a single game. It was Jerry Butler's 4th game as a pro, Harlon Hill's 6th. Only 2 of the 7 were taken before the 123rd pick in the draft. #Rams #Bills #Bears

Trying to imagine what it must have been like to be a 320-pound #nfl player in 1926. Eddie Keenan of the Hartford Blues weighed 60 pounds more than the next heaviest player in the league, HOFer Walt Kiesling of the Duluth Eskimos. Only 3 other guys weighed as much as 250.

Neat story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on July 4, 1944: Future #NFLer Ernie Bonelli took a jeep after the Allies liberated the town of Colliano in southwestern Italy & went looking for a couple of his uncles. Found one. Ernie later played for the #cardinals & #Steelers .

The last starting QB to do the punting for his team in an #nfl title game? The #Eagles ' Norm Van Brocklin in 1960, when Philly beat the Lombardi #Packers at Franklin Field. The #CHARGERS ' John Hadl did it 5 years after that, though, in the AFL.

The year they won their 1st #nfl championship, 1935, the #Lions trained for 10 days at Camp Crosley, a YMCA camp for boys on the shores of Tippecanoe Lake in Indiana, before finishing preparations at Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills MI, where they held camp for decades.

Sam Howell was the 141st pick in the #nfl draft. In the last 25 years, only these 5 QBs have been taken that late & thrown as many as 2,500 passes. You can cross off Brady. We won't see another of him for a long time, if ever. So if Howell turns out to be decent . . . #Commanders

Fun Fact: #Eagles QB Randall Cunningham got off 2 punts in his career of 80+ yards, both of which were the longest in the #nfl that season. So did Bob Waterfield, the #Rams ' HOF QB. If only they could have had a punt-off.

Sammy Baugh played a lot more #nfl games than Bob Waterfield did, but they contributed to their teams in similar ways -- throwing for TDs, intercepting passes on defense & punting with the best of them. Waterfield also was a top field-goal kicker, of course. #Commanders #Rams

Sammy Baugh's passing numbers during the war years (1942-45) vs. Sammy's numbers the 3 seasons after that (1946-48) -- for those wondering whether wartime competition inflated the stats of great players. #Commanders

A Jim Brown-inspired trivia question: Jim was the 1st #nfl player to average 20+ touches per game for his career (minimum: 1,000 regular-season touches), finishing at 22.21. Who's the all-time leader at 23.82? #Browns

This being PGA Championship Sunday, thought I'd pay homage to the former #nfl draft pick who tied for 3rd with Jack Nicklaus in 1962. "Gargantuan George Bayer," they called him. 6-5, 230-lb. tackle. Went in the 20th round to Washington in '50 but decided on golf. #Commanders

Jim Brown. Man. Just an otherworldly athlete. R.I.P. This will blow you away: When Jim retired after the 1965 season he had 7 of the Top 9 season rushing totals in #nfl history. #Browns

The season Spec Sanders had in 1947 for the NY Yankees of the All-America Conference -- the league that gave us the #Browns & #49ers -- has never been properly appreciated: 1,432 yards rushing, 1,442 passing as a single-wing tailback in a 14-game schedule. Check it out:

This is cool. In 1954 #Browns HOFer Otto Graham throws multiple TD passes (3) & runs for multiple scores (3) in a title-game blowout of the #Lions . Does it again the next year vs. the #Rams . Nobody does it after that for *55 seasons*. And his 3/3 game still hasn't been equaled.

Early #nfl game stories were amazing for what they left out. Washington won this 1941 game vs. the #Steelers 23-3 even though Sammy Baugh & alternate Frank Filchock threw 7 interceptions, a record for a winning team. None of them was even mentioned by the Evening Star! #Commanders

Dec. 5, 1948: "The 1st grid game between an all-[black] team & an all-white team," according to the SF Examiner. Southern smoked San Francisco State 30-0 at Kezar Stadium in the Fruit Bowl. It was the 1st such *college* game, maybe. The Chicago #Bears played a black all-star team in '38.

I've dropped Glenn Dobbs' name a time or 2. One of the greatest players never to play in the #nfl . Here's another distinction: Had far & away the best 7-pick game in pro football history: 405 yards & 3 TDs for the L.A. Dons vs. the #49ers in the All-America Conference in 1948.

Maybe you'd be more impressed with #colts HOF RB Lenny Moore if I told you he became the #nfl 's 1st 5,000/5,000 man in 1966 -- 5,000 yards rushing & 5,000 receiving -- & it was 29 years before another back joined the club (Marcus Allen, 1995). Only 4 total. #Raiders #Rams #Giants

Had forgotten that when a pitcher was pulled in the Polo Grounds back in the day -- as the #Giants ' Sal Maglie (35) was here -- he wouldn't have a short walk to the dugout, he'd have a long walk to CF. That's where the locker rooms were. Pitcher & manager went in opposite directions.

Speaking of #nfl schedules, the Chicago #cardinals went from a team that played 13 of 14 games at home in 1925 -- & the other uptown at Wrigley Field -- to a team that played 9 of 13 on the road 4 years later. Why? They couldn't draw decent crowds.
