Sounds similar to the bouncing ball metaphor -- a ball bouncing around in a box, and the box slowly gets bigger and bigger. Each time the ball hits a side of the box is a reminder of the grief, and as the box gets bigger, the time between hits is longer, but the hits never actually stop.

Studies have found that an astounding number of white doctors literally believe that Black people don't feel as much physical pain as white people. As in, they think Black people have fewer nerve endings and thicker skin (literally, not figuratively), and thus don't experience pain as strongly.
