At least he’d released her hands so she could deal with her hearing aid. Mia flexed her wrists. She bought herself a moment to feel free from his #snuggling her into an armlock. But she was still in the debris-strewn alley & he blocked her exit. She turned to face him. #vss365
Mia saw a flicker, like #candelight , from her cross-body bag. An incoming text. She tried to turn but couldn’t move. The change in his breathing suggested he was speaking. “I can’t hear you,” she kept her voice emotionless. She was pushed further into the alley. vss365
“Where’s Mia?” asked Ava as she & Ari grabbed a café table. “She’ll catch up,” said Ari. “I want to hear about Plan B.” “She makes your dress.” “Fabulous if so. But I don’t want to pressure her.” Ava indicated the empty third chair. “Should we send out a search #party ?” #vss365
“A Tree Becomes a Room” J P White (White Pine Press) – book review | Emma Lee's Blog
J P White A Tree Becomes a Room book cover J P White's "A Tree Becomes a Room", as the title suggests, concerns itself with the environment and memories of a life looked back on with knowledge of experiences gained, but not with nostalgia. "Four Silver Cranes" warns "No..
Mia was pulled & felt it better to go in that direction rather than be tugged off balance. She knew it was a man’s strength. He stopped in an alleyway. There could be a #chasm between them & the crowds. Her hearing aid dislodged, she could only sense him & waited. #vss365
They left the shop. Ari’s “You’d do that for me?” was lost in the #chanting noise of the crowd. Mia was trying to get her bearings & follow the others, but Ava had set off at a pace. Someone grabbed Mia’s arm, almost pulling her off balance. She tried to shake it off. #vss365
“You have a dress. I don’t,” said Ari. “It’s been fun,” said Ava. “Mia doesn’t seem worried.” “No. I feel this morning was an #overture to a bigger plan,” said Ari. “Preloved?” Ari scowled. “I needed you to decide on a shape so I could make a unique dress,” said Mia. #vss365
“Drama,” said Ari. “Drama isn’t a hot mess,” said Ava, #laughing . Mia took a photo. “The silhouette’s right but the lace & ruffles are too much.” Ari looked in the mirror. “I don’t think I’ve the appetite for anymore.” “Let’s go for lunch.” “There’s a Plan B?” said Ari. #vss365
“It’s all running too smoothly, aren’t they?” said Ari. “6 of us happily paired, something’s got to go wrong.” “Hope it’s something #miniscule , if so,” said Mia. “Yes, the lack of drama is a huge relief.” “The only drama I want is the dresses in the next shop,” said Ava. #vss365
“Now I can look at this dress in a new #context ,” said Ava. “We need to move on. Ari’s need is more than mine.” “What made Dan come round?” asked Ari as she returned & Ava went to change. “He thinks he doesn’t deserve her. But also wants to never lose her,” said Mia. #vss365
“He’d nailed his #colours to his mast,” said Ava. “Time to move on?” Ari returned to the fitting room. “That dress looks good on you,” said Mia. “But I don’t think Ari’s is here.” “His views on marriage were fixed before he met you,” said Mia. “He might have shifted?” #vss365

“There’s no Mikado silk trumpet,” said Ari. “Why’s Ava having #black coffee?” “Some fad,” said Mia. “That’s her dress, isn’t it?” Ava walked out in the blush dress. “The colour shows off the Chantilly lace.” Mia took a photo of the label. “You might need it.” “But Dan?” #vss365
Ari sat on the sofa. “I need a break.” “You’re not handing me a poisoned #chalice ?” said Ava. Mia shook her head. “Go on.” Ava looked at Ari, who nodded. “You’re up to something,” said Ari as Ava left. “You need a Mikado silk trumpet,” said Mia. “Don’t change the subject.” #vss365
“You’ve tried 2 dresses in 1 shop,” said Mia. “There’s another shop & Plan B yet.” “Try the #blush ,” said Ava. Ari ran her hands over the Mikado silk. “I like the feel.” “Ava should try the pink,” said Mia. “You try something that’s not A-line.” “You think?” said Ava. #vss365
“Not for you,” said Mia. “It fits the venue,” said Ari. “Next,” said Ava. “She’s got her head held #high now,” said Mia as Ari appeared in the next dress. “Too plain?” said Ari. “Classic,” said Ava. “Right material,” said Mia. Ari sighed. “What if I don’t find anything?” #vss365
“What’s the delay?” asked Ava. “It’s unlike Ari not to know what she wants,” said Mia. “I threatened to put a ballgown on her to spur her into action.” “Back to her #sunny self, then? This isn’t making you rethink you & Tom?” Mia shook her head. “How about you & Dan?” #vss365
The stockroom was harsh fluorescent lights & tightly packed dresses. “Try one ballgown?” said Mia. “I’m not #Belle .” Ari straightened her back & squeezed past the racks towards the back. Mia smiled. The less popular ones.” The consultant frowned. “Exactly,” said Ari. #vss365

Ari noticed the scented air, soft carpet, crystal lights, a coffee machine’s gurgle, a glistening of tiaras. “Who knew it’d be so #sensual ,” she muttered. Ava relaxed into a sofa, as if waiting to be entertained. “I’ve asked if you can pick some out.” Ari hugged Mia. #vss365

“You’ll be like a kid in a candy store,” said Dan. “Because it’s all hypothetical,” said Mia. “What’s right for Tom & me shouldn’t be your guide.” Ari frowned. “I’ve got a meeting.” She gathered a folder & left. Mia looked at Dan. “She’ll rekindle her #passion ,” he said. #vss365
“Won’t Jin need a suit?” asked Dan. “Are there any rules around colour?” “Modern brides wear white,” said Ari. “Grooms wear blue. Warm colours reserved for the bride if colour is used,” said Mia. “Details take the #romance away,” said Ari. “Maybe you & Tom got it right.” #vss365
“I don’t want a bridal consultant’s #ethereal woodland fairy choice either,” said Ari. “That’s why Ava & I are coming. You can have all the fun of trying dresses on & we won’t let you leave with something that’s not right,” said Mia. “But what if…” “There’s a Plan B.” #vss365

“I start thinking something #winsome not whimsical. I don’t want the princess ballgown,” said Ari. “You want a boho style wedding but not a boho dress,” said Mia. “See how hopeless it is?” “I think the problem is you’ve not tried any on. You don’t know what suits.” #vss365
“Not a huge wedding, we’ve both only children. So something #gentle , preferably outdoor,” said Ari. “With you,” said Mia. “But I still want it to feel more special than just an outdoor party.” “It will. Your dress?” “Weirdly, no idea.” “So what have you done with Ari?” #vss365
“I’m learning that because I can do something, doesn’t mean I should do it,” said Mia. “Besides Dan will retreat into his #chrysalis for a couple of days, figure out how to resolve it & emerge.” “Wow,” said Ari. “I forget how close you two have been.” “You said ‘venue’?” #vss365
