September 22, 1983: The ascent of Little Bigelow was gradual and the new trail well laid-out. The AT reached the ridgeline of the mountain and traversed a series of rocky knobs, several of which had open ledges.

We are standing on open light gray rock ledges atop a mountain looking over the treetops at a much loftier range of mountains arcing to our left as it stretches into the distance. Its slopes descend towards a valley on our left. There are some rocky patches along the ridge crests and a set of massive gray granite cliffs to the left of the crest as it ascends the nearest mountain. Everything else in the picture is covered with a lush forest consisting mostly of teal colored evergreens, with streaks of hardwoods turning red, gold and orange for autumn. The sky is clear and bright, but a bit hazy and whitewashed. The ledges are covered with pale green and dark green lichen. There are a few stunted spruce and leafy shrubs that have turned brick red or bright gold with autumn.

Standing next to a lake beneath a pale blue sky. There are many clouds moving in from the horizon, with a few clouds higher up, including some thin hazy clouds. The wooded far shore of the lake is silhouetted against the sun, with two low descending ridges meeting in a shallow V. The sun is shining through some of those thin hazy clouds as it approaches the treetops of the righthand ridge. Several branches of a submerged dead tree project above the lake surface not far offshore. The lake surface mirrors the sky and the two ridges. It is flat and calm except for dozens of small circular ripples created by a raindrops from a light shower.

The rocky shore of a large lake. The forest surrounding the far shore is beginning to show autumn colors, dimly seen in the evening twilight. The sky is filled with low clouds streaked with pink by the recent sunset. All of this is mirrored on the dead clam surface of the lake.

Beneath a light blue sky with puffy clouds a dark blue river makes a gentle S curve through a deep gorge between two mountains. The mountainside on the right is heavily wooded and has a railroad and a two-lane road running along its base beside the river. The second mountain forms the background of the picture. It is tall and the side facing us looks almost vertical, with several naked rock cliffs among the trees. A 4-lane interstate highway runs along the river bank at its base.

A roaring stream churned through massive gray and beige rock formations in a lively series of flumes and cascades between forested banks teeming with maples. Red, orange and gold foliage and the bright trunks of white birch trees contrast with the dark green spruce and fir.

Beneath a soft blue late afternoon sky we are at the edge of an open ridge crest. Looking over the top of a thicket of shrubs just starting to sprout leaves and down a wooded mountainside into a valley hundreds of feet below. A rural lane makes meandering loops around farm fields, forests and wooded hills. Terraced fields climb partway up a few of the slopes. A series of wooded ridges and narrow valleys cascade to the misty horizon.

Shortly after dawn... I passed through a grove of old trees whose trunks stood like tall pillars of obsidian, straight and black,

We emerge from the forest into a high pasture covered with a silvery morning fog. The rising sun is peeking over the horizon, painting the scene with a rich, golden backlighting. A small herd of cattle is grazing far to our right, floating dimly in silver-gold mists which clung to the slopes and contours of the field, concealing the ground below and washing out the horizon. A few scattered tall trees rise through the mists on the edge of the field. It is an unearthly sight. It looks like cow heaven.

A clear deep blue sky. We are standing beside a bush on the shore of a pond. The shoreline is rocky, there are more partially submerged rocks just offshore. A mixed evergreen and hardwood forest surround the pond, continuing up the slopes of a small mountain directly adjacent to the far shore. The evergreens are dark teal, the hardwoods are a riot of reds, oranges, golds, yellows and bright greens.

A cliff of coarse gray brown rock with numerous cracks and fissures. There are patches of golden brown dormant grass growing in many of the cracks. Looking out over a valley with rolling hills and buildings a few hundred feet below. A forest of cedars and leafless hardwoods grows below the cliff and down across the valley, which rolls downward towards the city of New Haven on the horizon with Long Island Sound and Long Island just visible as streaks of gray beyond. The late afternoon sky is a pale blue gray. The setting sun, offscreen right, is casting long shadows sand a golden light across the scene.

Beneath a soft light blue sky with a single small cloud in the upper right corner of the photo, we are standing on a shady portion of the shore of a large lake. Our portion of shoreline is covered with tall grasses and a few leafy shrubs. The far shores are low forested ridges, mostly covered with evergreens sprinkled with a few hardwoods showing red, orange or gold autumn foliage. Beyond those ridges, a bit hazy with distance, rises a massive lofty mountain, with extensive alpine regions in its top half.

A green meadow sprinkled with small white flowers on a slight rise along the Pacific coast of Oregon. The sky is a soft blue with many billowing clouds. A beautiful blue bay with many majestic craggy sea stacks. Impressive waves are crashing against those rocks and the beach of dark beige sand. A sea cliff of varying height borders the beach, backed by a series of rugged wooded ridges. A mountain rises behind them, its top brushed by the clouds. At the far end of the bay, the sea cliff rises to a lofty mountain right against the shore.

We are standing atop cliffs of reddish gray rock looking down into a sun-drenched valley hundreds of feet below. The valley floor is relatively flat, although wooded hills bisect it to our right and others rise in the distance along the entire horizon. Most of the valley floor is wooded, too, but there are several green fields, some houses and a small pond visible. The sky is bright and clear, but rather whitewashed along the horizon, which is the only portion of the sky visible in the photo.

A deep blue sky with banks of fluffy clouds. Atop a dark gray rock cliff slanting down to the edge of a mixed forest of green cedars and leafless hardwoods. Above those treetops we can see a broad valley several hundred feet below stretching out towards a port city on a seacoast about 10 miles away. Much of the valley is covered with forest, but there are many houses and other buildings visible through the trees, growing more dense towards the city. Those trees are mostly leafless hardwoods with scattered groves of pines.

We are standing on an outcrop of very light gray rock with patches of dark brown and light green lichen. The sky is clear but hazy and gray. Objects grow increasingly bluish and indistinct with distance. To our right, a two-lane highway that has just traversed a pass through this mountain and the next winds down and around that next mountain. The forested ridge below us block the view of that pass. Mostly forested foothills and hollows slope down into a very large valley beyond. You can barely make out the shapes of farm fields and strips of forest in the near portion of that valley. Everything past that disappears into the haze.
