When using yourself as the fool/fall guy in a story or skit, at what point do you know you've successfully employed the individual story to illustrate a universal human condition or truth (especially when accompanied by the insight of humor)?

Most of us know much of this info, but still, it's never a bad thing to refresh ourselves on the history. Helps us avoid sinking into the crass commercialism which has become our holidays (formerly known as holy days).

Samhain - Celtic Origins, Rituals & Halloween | HISTORY
Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “sow-win”) is a pagan religious festival originating from an ancient Celtic spiritual tradition. It is usually celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome in the harvest and usher in “the dark half of the year.”

Sometimes the internet is so odd: Was looking for images of elder Eastern European farmers and this one popped up!
Perfect for Halloween though.
Afterthought edit: captions anyone?

From a study shared by @drgavazzi (Ethics and Psychology). Certainly hope more research is underway.
Admittedly, my own confirmation bias on the subject is showing as I'm not competitive and have always thought "healthy competition" is an oxymoron.

I don't know Judith's reference for this Spout, but it's exactly what happened to me when turning on Morning Edition (NPR) today. Educated/worked as a journalist, but guess I'm not tough enough anymore to listen to human cruelty. Don't want to be an ostrich, yet - yes Judith, it hurts. Too much.
Just Judith'n'ALF #VotedYes @JustJudith_n_ALFI didn't switch it off instantly, thinking it wouldn't hurt me to listen.02:17 AM - Oct 10, 2023

Yeah, probably the proverbial exercise in futility, but can't help myself. When I see them wet, cold and not moving, they get a drop of honey. They immediately respond. You can see the proboscis dipped into the sweets.

Not a great camera on my phone (understatement) - the Bird feeder is literally 15' from my window. However, wanted to share the miracle of Mama Cardinal feeding her very late fledging. Pretty sure critters (Coons, Possums, house Wrens) destroyed two of their nests this season. So happy for her!

Please, I do hope you'll take a little bit of time to listen or read the transcript. I can not stress how important the info is to those who care not only for our own bodies, but for others and our planet. Food geeks have known/practiced for decades.

So, am I getting this one correct?
R-Speaker works with D-House Members to temporarily avoid gov't shutdown. Then, a few R-members, lead by Matt Gaetz, organize to oust R-Speaker precisely for working with D-House Members, who then in turn provided the votes needed to fire McCarthy.

Do you have an opinion on this series or its author? My sit-down reading time is limited and saved for non-fiction, so I generally listen to novels. Rupert Degas performs this series as brilliantly as the author writes history/mystery via Australian characters.

An exchange with @blackcatprose this morning prompted this share. There are other org sites as well.
The Straits of Mackinac (which joins Great Lakes Huron and Michigan) is a favorite viewing spot here. There's even a dedicated site and postings. Might be something similar in your area.

Many blessings on the New Year to our Jewish sisters and brothers!
If you are so inclined, it's easy honor them/their holiday with a food from Jewish cuisine as it's built-in to many of our traditional foods. The only cooking at my house today is winter food prep, but will eat a fig and date.

@GailG Hello! Good heavens, what a day yesterday! With earplugs, headphones, closed eyes and you in mind, the MRI was not awful at all. Did some extra grocery shopping for company, Emil Maita's 1st professional grooming (meh) and then home to unexpectedly overnight company. Agack!

Thank you to Sassy for this one.
Sassy Musing @Sassy_MusingWhen someone around you says that the younger generation doesn't want to work, hit them with the stats. The National Cost of Living has increased OVER 500% from 1970 to 2022. Wages have increased 80%. Cost of a house is up about 100% and cost of rent is up 150%.11:38 PM - Sep 11, 2023

Clock is ticking for my son's wedding this month. The next couple weeks will be crazy-busy with out of town/state guests in and out plus all the requisite cleaning/cooking. Will love it all during and will be equally happy to have solitude returned. You understand.

Well dang it, Spouters! You did it again. I popped on far too often this morning because you're smart and engaging. Truly off to work now with a fave quote. My beloved madmen, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, understood the reality of absurdity*.

It's a gorgeous day and have enjoyed a visit here this morning, but no matter, still want to share a favorite line from yesterday's book:
"If this isn't hell, the devil is surely taking notes." (Author - Stuart Turton)
It gave me a chuckle when thinking about politics.

Although I'd love to support Spoutible with a $25 recurring monthly amount, my $834 monthly income would not permit it. Thought I made a one time donation. Can you/the team please help me fix it ? Thank you.
(Reconfiguring budget to try for monthly $5)
Trusting only you see this post.

Please, and more if possible. Mr. Bouzy and team need a good living on top of this beauty they've created for us. Let's keep adverts sparse and ethically/environmentally selective.
Christopher Bouzy @cbouzyThey would need to contribute $5. However, we can't run the platform on donations indefinitely. For example, many of you want us to release Pods ASAP, and that will increase our operating costs significantly.07:42 AM - Sep 08, 2023

Another fine coffee time with Spouters. Thank you! @GailG introduced me to a new term: aphantasia. Only 4% of people experience it. (I'm one of the 10% who think only in images.) Sure helps me understand why some people can do horror or violent tv/movies/books but I can't without suffering.
