I recently asked the girls to take care of dinner on Wednesdays. "Does that mean you'll do the dishes afterward?" 12 said slyly.

I started to say "I'm okay with that," but then she interrupted herself: "Wait. You already do the dishes like three times a day, right? Never mind, we'll do them." 💗

12 did a "The eight dimensions of me" paper for health class and this was her "spiritual" entry. I am so proud.

Why am I the only one in my household who believes that if I KNOW it's in the house somewhere, if I look a little harder I'll find it?

Just saw an article that the Washington Senate passed a bill to ban child marriage. We have child marriage?? Ugh.

12 is having two friends over tonight. 14 is having one over on Wednesday. I'm starting to think I should maybe do something about the stack of boxes and bed pieces in the dining room. And the dishes backlog. And making E clean the bathroom. And making the kids clean the craft area.

12 was on Amazon and wanted a crocheted mushroom, but didn't want to pay shipping. I quickly said "Oh, I could make you something like that" (sorry, whoever's it was) and she agreed. So, obviously, I had to make a mushroom. Which I did. She decided it made a perfect octopus hat. #spoutibleknitting

Look! I finished my sweater! And I love it! The size is just right and I like having the knit side next to my skin, though I don't do stockinette as evenly as I could and it shows more with the purl side, which is too bad. #spoutibleknitting

I'm having a really weird feeling. I was downstairs at the Red Alder craft-in with constant talking and music and announcements, and now I'm in my nice quiet peaceful hotel room and I...kind of...miss the noise? Maybe I had a stroke in the shower.

12 told me she had a terrible dream that 14 and E were moving to Ohio for 14's education, and leaving her and me behind. We hugged. Then she said, "I wonder how many cookbooks they would need?" I blinked, and she said, "You know. So they could eat."

I own 109 cookbooks. Do I win or lose?

Addendum: the soup was a success. It's girls' night, so after dinner we watched a movie and had ice cream per tradition. "Why did I have ice cream!" 12 wailed when we put our bowls away afterward and she noticed the soup pot still out. "There is more delicious soup!"

Gardener problems: I'm making potato leek soup and puzzled over why the recipe insists leeks have tons of sand in their leaves. Mine don't, and why sand? After a while I realized commercial leek growers must hill them up (rather than my "throw them in the ground for a year" approach). #gardening

My Valentine's gift for E every year is that he doesn't have to get me a gift. So today I have to decide what gift I want for myself. Do I buy books? Or plants? Or save my money for Red Alder this weekend and the oodles of yarn I expect to be there?

I'm at the park with my kids. It's been a long time since I've sat watching them play. Admittedly, now they don't need my supervision and I'm only sitting because I'm recovering from flu, but it's still nice.

I dreamed last night, as is typical, of being somewhere in public and discovering I was naked. But then I was able to put clothes on. I feel this must be some sort of psychological milestone.

My fever is broken but I feel utterly unlike eating. Breads are the only things that don't sound terrible. Unfortunately I've been sick so haven't been making bread. Fortunately I did order some muffins in the recent grocery pickup. I hate to say it, but I think I'm gonna have to buy bread.

Both my kids, who loved elementary school, went off today sad that they were facing so many more years of school and wishing they could stay home forever. I hope it's just that we're a household of sickness at the moment, but I'm not sure what to do for them, and it worries me.

I was getting slightly concerned about the fact that my January book budget was going unspent. But then I saw B&N is doing another preorder sale and my worries were erased.

So I have what I think is the flu. I was privately feeling sorry for myself because I'm the mom, I take care of everyone, no one takes care of me.

It occurred to me tonight that my current malaise may be because my crafting is sucking at the moment. I did something weird attaching the first sleeve of my dream cardigan and have to undo it; my simple drawstring bag fabric on the loom is wonky; my writing is stalled. And it's too early to garden.

The girls have a two-hour delay tomorrow and I'm really enjoying the jubilation. "We can have a breakfast with actual *protein*! I don't even like scrambled eggs but we could make scrambled eggs!" says 14. "It's a blessing from the hair dye gods!" says 12.

Her childhood home was a ruin. The crumbled brick chimney barely fit into her memories of winter days by a roaring fire. There, her old fort wasn't. There, her parents' stern fence against their enemies, the Fosters, had fallen. A single fence #post remained to mark the boundary. #Spoutories
