Hi folks! 👋 I'm a clinical psychologist & researcher at the University of Pennsylvania studying the effectiveness & implementation of psychosocial treatments for suicide risk. I mostly spout about {#id:3683#}, evidence-based psychotherapy, implementation science (#ImpSci), & my dog, Bowie.

thread 6 Threaded Spouts
Now that we have threads, I wanted to do one on national crisis resources for #SuicidePrevention and mental health crises. All of these services are 24 hours/365 days a year and free to use.

Agree! In any given country/society you will have people experiencing volatile states of mind — pairing this reality with mass proliferation of firearms yields the uniquely American mass-shooting nightmare.

1/3 As you’ve observed, suicide is often as much about structural factors (like financial support or housing) as it is about individual factors (like chronic illness or social support). This is especially true in marginalized populations, like those with disabilities.
Margaret ♿ @Cannibaccess
Suicide prevention among disabled populations & those living with chronic illness would be interesting. I know many who have died due to unmanaged chronic pain and lack of social support leading to extreme isolation and destitution.

1/5 Thanks for asking! Older adults are one of the highest risk groups for suicide, especially older men. Suicide attempts in older adults are more likely to be fatal than in younger adults.
MJL @JustOneMoreThing
I'm an attorney. My practice area is probates and trust administrations. I've had some clients whose elderly loved ones committed suicide. Sometimes because of elder abuse. I would be interested in hearing more about suicide prevention in the elderly communities. Thank you!

I want to get into spouting more and am interested in what folks might like to hear about. So let's do an Ask Me Anything about #SuicidePrevention ! Are there questions you have or topics you'd like to hear more about?

Bumping this, as the strike is still on. Support the union's strike fund if you can! #AcademicSpoutible

Grad students at Temple University are on strike after spending a year trying to negotiate better pay + benefits. Temple has retaliated by canceling tuition waivers and health insurance for those striking.

I see too often how mental health is talked about, it feels infantile, and exploitative towards those of us who live with this. I see too many who want to use it as a blanket excuse for awful evil behavior which makes it harder for the millions of us just trying to exist with this. Im tired.

A coalition of NYT contributors have written a letter calling out the anti-trans bias in the paper. Supporters can sign as well. Please share widely. https://nytletter.com/

As someone who loves posting threads, I hope the @Spoutible team considers some tweaks to how they currently function. Only the first spout in a thread will show up on your main profile and the thread spacing disconnects the "first" thread spout from the "reply" spouts, making it hard to follow.
