Stories are like wine. How many infinitely subtle nuances are there in different types, making each sip an original experience - yet fundamentally it's all just variations on fermented grape juice.

As with most things it's all in the execution. Good video!

It's four days before Christmas and E is asking if we should get the kids a Switch. After years of no contribution whatever to the Christmas gift-giving plan, he wants to make suggestions now? And what about our travel budget he was so worried about two days ago? He wants it himself, doesn't he.

National Novel Writing Month is upon us. Make sure the writer in your life is well fed and hydrated as they hunch over their laptop for the next 30 days.

If I had a good idea I would! Part of why I wanted "practice" runs was also to tease out and shape ideas for the real writing month. I thought maybe having a short-form "anthology" in my back pocket would make November run a bit smoother.

Congratulations to your daughter and hang in there. I just hit today’s goal about a half hour ago and was actually kinda surprised.

One of my long-planned, never-executed goals is to participate in #NaNoWriMo

I don't really have any specific ideas, it's just something I've wanted to do. I've thought about writing 5,000 words per month Jan - Oct, partly for writing practice and partly to lay down some world-building, but .. TBD
Kerry Share @KerryShare
My first day of #NaNoWriMo has not gone quite as planned, but I got the exciting news that my daughter was accepted to the Regional Honor Choir she auditioned for last month!

Now that I'm done bragging, I've gotta figure out how to write again...

When you're trying to wish someone well with their writing, is it bad luck to say "good luck"? Is there a writing equivalent to the theater's "break a leg"?

Like "crack the keyboard" or something similar?

I do not have my November bullet journal pages, no plan for #NaNoWriMo and still need to make a Thanksgiving menu. On the other hand, my website is 14 years old this Thanksgiving so there's that!

#NaNoWriMo is the perfect mixture of permission to write a novel and accountability to finish it.

My favorite part of #PrepTober is freaking out all October about the public commitment to writing 50k words for #NaNoWriMo , so then later in November you can also freak out about having to write 50k words because of your public commitment.

I've come to learn how to show myself more grace. Rest comes in many forms; sometimes I consume, sometimes I create. I don't feel guilty anymore for watching a show series, or playing video games. I used to feel guilty too for writing books I didn't think anyone would read 😅 "I deserve rest, too."

I don't. All I can do is rotate my hobbies. If I'm reading it means I'm not gaming. If I'm gaming it means I'm not reading. And if I'm not doing any of those two it means I'm catching up on TV shows.

Do any other working writers feel like they can't have hobbies without sacrificing potential writing time? How do you deal with the guilt?

I'm determined to finally make time for a couple of fantasy titles I've been wanting to read all year: The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez, and The Iron Princess by Barbara Hambly!

Happy Monday #1LineADay :

She regained enough of herself to look up through the detritus and see unwelcome stars shining through a gaping maw to the night sky where the ceiling had once been.

That's a bit how I do it. I think about scenes I want to write and get them down. The connective tissue tends to weave itself and arcs begin to develop, and whatever doesn't make sense gets cleaned up on the next pass.

That is quite the detailed slate you've set for yourself! Being of the pantser variety I'm envious of those who can plan things out so well.
