I love love LOVE that Derek lets me embrace my crone powers here! Gotta have some of us out front with that! Even Xander grew a mane for it.

DHALGREN was like a fever dream that I never wanted to wake from: counterculture characters I recognized from my own life in a bleakly familiar yet alien landscape. I even called in sick to a job when I badly needed the money because I couldn't bear to put it down. Delany is a genius.

I once transplanted a yellow-purple iris from a friend's yard. It came back for a few years, then suddenly spread - but the new spray was all white! Puzzled, I asked a volunteer at the City Greenhouse. "Bearded irises are mongrels," he said. "You never know what they'll become."

It's not a cure for my travel yearning, but I keep finding different photos of the gardens at The Alhambra in Granada from our Morocco-Spain trip in 2019 & every time I see one, a part of my soul goes "ahhhh".

Making dinner backwards
A #LazySingleCook thread

I may be the only person you know who makes dinner right after I cook it. There's method to my madness. I don't like to cook when I'm hungry because I'm too impatient. I'd rather warm something up already cooked, then tackle cooking as I'm digesting.

Two of my dearest friends each had their children through IVF, one after multiple miscarriages that had almost sunk her. This is sheer cruelty.

Super congratulations to my friend India Nicole Burton being named "1st Runner Up" in the Chicago Reader "Best Playwright" category. Not best new playwright, just Best. Pretty damn great for a 1st year in Chi-Town with a first play!

I write plays & musicals. Most of my plays and monologues are from the POV of women bumping up against some kind of challenge. My musicals are far-ranging depending on who my collaborators are.

And now there is pea soup fog between us & Severance Hall til 1 am. My GF is getting cold feet about the drive. Hmm.

This might turn into a bye week. As much as I love the orchestra, I'm thinking my legs won't mind staying up in the recliner.

I can't tell you how frustrating my afternoon has been, trying to deal with income & tax docs to renew a relative's benefits near a ticking deadline. I must admit the county website & their AI text assistant was awesome, sending me to the right links without confusion. Well done, Cuyahoga!

From Melissa Hillman
Alphonso X of Castille commissioned El Libro de los Juegos in 1283. The Moors ruled the Iberian Peninsula for 700 years til 1492 & they weren't all light-skinned Arabs as can be seen from images in this illuminated manuscript.

On the surface I've written 2 short plays about angelic encounters but they're oh so different. A Rustle of Wings, set in a LGBT bar, is about embracing what makes you stand out. Revelation 24:12 shows a midlife marriage & a wife resisting her husband's assumptions about her.

This is from last year but it's a GREAT article about Terrence Spivey's play produced in Africatown, which was expanded into a full length play this year, & how it came about. Both Terrence & journalist/playwright Chris Johnston are long-time friends of mine.

My pumpkin ($1000), 3 Barneys ($500), 5 $100s, & 4 $25s. Some of us didn't wait in line to cash out, as we carry some casino chips instead of cash for later buy-ins. I met Mike the Mouth Matusow's GF at a Vegas tournament & she said he once left a belly pack with a $10,000 Bellagio chip in a cab.

Jean-Guihen Queyras, the soloist tonight for Haydn's recently rediscovered Cello Concerto in C major, paired with Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony & Egmont Overture. Expecting a full house at Cleveland Orchestra. The self-taught conductor Philippe Herreweghe came up via Baroque music.

Buckeye Rd once had the largest concentration of Hungarians in the world outside Budapest. In the ‘20s, there were over 40,000 Hungarian immigrants. Many still lived there when we moved to Cleveland in 1963. My wedding rehearsal dinner was at a nearby Hungarian restaurant with a cimbalon player.

Our Final Table just before the chop last night. 8 regs & 1 guy from MI who'd never been here. A 9-way even chop is unusual, but blinds were crazy high after hours of tight play. I'm next to the dealer, my pal Mike in the green Tshirt center. We go way back & took a poker cruise together in 2020.

My ankles are still a touch swollen this morning after a 12 hour poker tournament, an amount of sitting time equivalent to a SF-Tokyo flight. Luckily I have a long day of rest today at home until my Haydn/Beethoven concert tonight. Then back in the saddle Friday for a Main Event.

The Fort Hill staircase at the Rocky River metroparks. It was either a descent down 155 steps in the rain or a 25 minute walk back through the park, down a different hill through mud & trees. I took the stairs. Slowly. Dec. 2020.

12 hours of poker battle. We get to the final table & everyone is so done that a chip leader suggests a 9-way even chop. No one wants to risk making $865 in last place, so it's unanimous. We all make $3161, better than 4th place money. Done. A good day's work.

I made it through, short-stacked, then tripled up on a big hand with KK. We are down to 29 players on 4 tables of 9 from 136 players. I'm short again, but still scrambling.

They pay 15 spots if I can last that long. Definitely need a double-up soon.

Guy sits down at my table, goes all-in the 1st hand. I look down at QQ. Call. He has AQ of clubs. I flop a set of Qs. It goes runner clubs for a flush, & I double him up, becoming a short stack. 🤢
