I've found we can make pesto out of a lot of things. We made a spearmint pesto last year that was amazing.

Thank you for your positive comment! I do get frequent compliments on my shirts, as well as on my vests, hats and beard. I dress to make myself happy, and if other people smile, that's a bonus!

I was 49 and my son was 13 when we lost his mom, my wife of 30 years due to complications from surgery for a genetic disorder. There’s a Willie Nelson song from around that time that goes “it’s not something you get over; it’s just something you get through.” I listened to that song a lot then.

To hold despair at arm's length, I've been cutting back on news, listening to a lot of Dvořák and Beethoven, and getting outdoors as much as possible. I also joined a literary book club. I still know what's going on in the world, but I focus more on what I can do something about.

His jam now, though, is roast beef Phillies: he griddles the beef with sweet onion and green bell pepper, then puts it in a split French roll with Swiss and a little Thousand Island dressing and bakes it.

When my son was little, he went to the doc for his yearly and doc asked him, "what's your favorite food?" He expected an answer like "ice cream" or "pancakes". My son brightened, happy to have been asked, and declared: "Ham sandwiches!" Doc laughed and said no kid had ever said that before.

Here is just a small part of his collection. I like to play with them, too, but I usually dip into the bins of old blocks and make new things, usually architecture.

I forgot to alt-text this one. It is a B&W photo of a group of men in work clothes sitting on steps, who appear to be Hispanic, looking at the camera, some smiling, some gesturing.

I have a whole series from that day. Unlike the common "abandoned derelict mall" photos, everything was orderly that day, just empty.

That's a good question and I don't know. There is the bigger problem of Norway spruce monocrop forestry in a region that should be mixed oak/beech forest. The beetles spread quickly through spruce forests. Fortunately, there is an increasing trend of allowing the oak/beech forests to regenerate.
