A little history

My first instrument was violin. Started at the age of 6. Quickly started playing piano along with violin. Then I started singing in 6th grade with a school boys choir.

Picked up a guitar at 14
Picked up my first bass at 15

For on-stage bass sound, I prefer theaters and more intimate venues over giant amphitheaters and arenas. Stadiums are my least favorite. I hear better in those smaller venues, and hearing myself better means I play better.

Big shows can be exciting, but the sound of a good theater can’t be beat.

You can play 7/8 over 4/4 or visa versa

Here’s the equation
7/8x8=4/4x7

Learning the bass lines of songs I love is my favorite way to practice and gain more knowledge. I try to utilize what I learn from other great players and parts into each new tour.

Practicing my band’s songs is sometimes like taking a tranquilizer shot

Plus I never know what songs I need to practice when set lists come in an hour before the show.

Practicing as many songs as possible though, I’m always ready for the deepest tracks or the newest songs.

I know I was spouting off about not needing to play fast or super technical to create memorable basslines. I also think it is a great thing to practice in order to play fast and master bass techniques. The more I practice proper positioning and fretboard independence the freer I feel on stage

Do you like your strings brand new or old and greasy?

I like the 2/3 mark. I usually change strings every third show especially if I sweat a lot.

At home I don’t change strings till I see rust on them 😂🎸

Is it better to be the best player of a particular style or be able to play as many styles as possible?

I would say this depends on your goals and desires, but in today's musical industry, knowing as many styles as possible leads to more musical diversity in your playing and most likely more gigs.

I would prefer you remember my baas lines over my technique.

When thinking of basslines, remember to serve the song, not your brand.

The bass can function as the gateway between the rhythm world and the melodic world. A solid bass allows for more extreme time fluctuations between those two worlds
