A Winner a Day #Calendar from The Little Sisters of the Poor. They care for needy elders in over 30 countries. Mr.D contributes every year.

A small, inconspicuous fundraising calendar from The Little Sisters of the Poor, founded in 1839 in France. They have facilities in 30 countries caring for needy elders.
Mr.D. Was impressed, decades ago, when he would see a tiny, old nun, sitting quietly on a folding chair with a donation basket on her lap, in the underground regional rail station in center city Philadelphia. When you left a donation, she would thank you, and ask you to pray for her. He has been donating to the calendar for many years because of her.

A Moongate, an arched #Gate set into a limestone wall, in Queen Elizabeth Park, Hamilton, Bermuda. Sept. 2010

The Moongate was introduced to the Bermuda Islands in the mid-19th century by a sea captain who brought illustrations of this Chinese archway back to Bermuda with the hope of creating his own. There are now about 40 such gates scattered throughout the islands.
This Moongate, the oldest in Bermuda, is at the ParLaVille Rd entrance to Queen Elizabeth Park in Hamilton. It is unusual b/c it has actual swirled wrought iron gates that close; most are a fully open arch. Also, it is set into a high wall, similar to the original Chinese design. Bermuda gates are usually stand-alone, or frame a path, or join a low wall. Built of local limestone, it is about 8’ high set into a 10’ high weathered wall, with vines and greenery curved along the right side of the arch. A paved path leads through to steps leading down to the street.

My favorite #Lamp , partly because I love its shape and the way the light glows through the colored panels in the shade, and partly because it was a birthday gift, years ago, from my sons.

A Tiffany-esque lamp, with a dark bronze square, tapered column on a stepped base, topped by a triangular glass shade with a deep teal trapezoid center panel surrounded by flame colored edging panels. Black leading, and a square stepped top complete the design. It casts a lovely soft glow when lit.

A young grandson gave me this Hamsa, or #Eye of Fatima, for Christmas a few years ago. He bought it at his school’s Santa Shop, because his friend explained that it protects people, and he wanted to protect me. I keep it in my purse.

A metal Hamsa, or Eye of Fatima, is an amulet believed, in multiple cultures, to ward off evil.
This one, about 2 inches high, has scrolled designs, with a large blue eye in the palm.

While I’m not usually a fan of #Pearl jewelry (a little too lady of the manor for me) I love the design of these earrings Mr.D brought me from a business trip to London. I like their simple elegance.

Against a gold fabric background, a pair of gold and pearl earrings. Hanging from a gold stud is a long, four pronged setting, narrow at the stud and flaring slightly at the bottom to hold a creamy pearl.
