If you have offspring 16-17, I encourage you to STRONGLY encourage them to practice writing their name as a signature, like 3-5 times DAILY.

This lays bare the centuries long battle to keep democracy from representing all people. Contrast this with keeping 1/2 the population from voting until the 20s & 10% of it out through violence, poll taxes, literacy tests, gerrymandering, through to today.

I grew up in a conservative household too, and the one glaring thing I remembered was how little thought the GOP wanted their voters to put into voting.
We would literally get a sample ballot marked with the party preferences, and a letter saying how as "good patriots" this is how we should vote.
