5 Threaded Spouts
Heather Cox Richardson's "Letters from an American" left me wondering what we're going to see from the Russians as we go forward as a nation.

Cheering broke out in the gallery and among Democrats on the floor of the House of Representatives this afternoon when the House passed the $60.8 billion aid bill for Ukraine. The vote was 311–112, with all Democrats and 101 Republicans voting in favor and 112 Republicans voting against. One Republi..

Easter. May it give us hope that the worst thing is not the last thing. Resurrection is a fantastical idea, but hope is not. Happy Easter everyone, I pray but for hope.

I appreciate humor, but as I watched Colbert make fun of parts of tonights SOTU speech it just pissed me off. There is nothing to laugh about regarding this next election. Old and slow Joe jokes? F-that.

Voting is more about identity and values, and little about specific issues, facts, or programs. This is a repost of an essay from 2006.

I did the "uncommitted" thing in 2016 by caucusing for Bernie Sanders. It was my attempt to try and convince Hillary to lean to the left and not alienate progressive voters. But, when the time came to vote for Hillary, I had zero hesitation to vote for her. Progressive friends, please consider this.

Love the scoreboard. I don't fixate on sports, but keeping track of scores is handy to converse with those that do. Great future feature IF it's both easy to dive into and ignore at the same time.

Iowa officials are "appalled" and "angry" over this "senseless tragedy." But, let's not hold our breath on one fucking thing being done to solve these problems. Perry is the town my best friend grew up in and his mom taught there for over 30 years. It's a meat packing town so the local minority

Reading these posts day after day is a reminder that learning about our history and current affairs is, on one hand, an intellectual pursuit but, on another hand, an opportunity to collectively look in the mirror as a nation and wonder who we are and what we might become.

“It all began so beautifully,” Lady Bird remembered. “After a drizzle in the morning, the sun came out bright and beautiful. We were going into Dallas.” It was November 22, 1963, and President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy were visiting Texas. They were there, in the home state o..

Can someone help me with the reason Republicans refer to the Democratic Party as the "Democrat" Party? What did I miss? Did they just create this out of thin air as some kind of slur? Is the extra syllable mentally taxing?

We need to stop acting as if the major networks are serious news operations. Stop watching. Stop paying attention. Their priority is to have an election they can both-sides and cover like a sports event. They think that's where the money is for them. We need to challenge that assumption.

Every time #GovernorGitmo commits some new depravity, I want us to pause and remember that he was allegedly one of the War on Terror torturers the Obama administration decided to not prosecute.
Every time we let them off for the sake of "civility" or "norms", it gets worse.

In response to Salma Typhii.
I first voted in 1984 (huh, that's odd). For me, after all these decades, the Republican party has just distilled itself down to its most truthful form. This is what they are, always were and always will be. Just no mask anymore.

Every story about the shutdown should be about the millions that will be affected. So tired of the non-stop "war" between the parties storyline. There is no war, it is a hostage situation.

Key to the lie that enables the extreme reaction has been the longstanding pretense that America's teachers are a bunch of radicals, as I wrote in this piece for NBC:

It looks as though the impeachment inquiry is a meaningless process by skipping a house vote to launch an official investigation. Some FBI testimony is also starting to fall apart under scrutiny. Sadly, none of this matters. It will be covered ad nauseum and none of these points will be made.
