I agree there is a learning curve to Mastodon but it's ease of use has in my opinion improved immensely over the past year. I think what makes Mastodon so tough is it's so global that it's difficult to find "your community" there. I'm currently on Medium's own Mastodon server and happy there.

As you mentioned there has to be advantages and disadvantages to this approach. This Salon articles talks about both: https://www.salon.com/2022...

The idea is of a federated system for social media is similar to email servers. You don't have to be be on the same server as others to interact with one another. If one server goes down or you don't like how it is being managed), you can move to a new server without losing follows/followers.

Post was promising, but they were too focused on how media and content providers would be compensated and not enough on building community. I was there early (and even verified there) but there just wasn't enough there to keep going back.

As a KC Chiefs fan, I think it's a great feature! For those out there that don't know American football, this is the THE final championship game of the season. We call it the Super Bowl. I suspect with all things Spoutible, this is a test for how sporting events may or may not work in the future.

It's definitely difficult to grow a platform without revenue so the ads are understandable. Nothing is free in this world. Has there been any thought to offering a paid subscription to users for an ad free experience?

I've donated on occasion in the past too. I wonder instead of relying on donations, they could rely on with subscription or ads? Spoutible free with ads but with a subscription you get a no advertisement experience.

@djchuang I agree with you many organizations are questioning if there is value to having a social media presence. I don't know the answer there. I always felt there were benefits for people to social network with people but thought it awkward for companies to social network with customers.

It can be argued that organizations have less control of their presence in a centralized system they do not control versus a decentralized system where they have the option to controlling/maintaining their own instance/server. A number governments in the EU are taking a look at ActivityPub now.

What impresses me most about Spoutible is that as features are brought out, the layout and design presented to the user has been spot on. A lot of emerging and competing platforms have made a jumbled mess out of their layout as they added new features. Spoutible is above the rest in this regard.

Happening now as I described it.
Maybe, we unreasonably expect everyone to to have the skill set to use search well? Sort of like the older generation expecting everyone to be able to read and write in cursive?

I've worked in IT the past 20 years with a room full of scientists. Most times they ask me questions that they can Google for an answer. What's even worse is when I have to Google the answer so I can give them the answer.

I think the Threads user interface is sloppy and too similar to Instagram (never been a fan). Threads is working on ActivityPub/Mastodon compatibility. Once that is complete, I'll likely follow my friends on Threads (there is a lot of them) via Mastodon. #fediverse

I wasn't trying to come across complaining but offering suggestions for improving Spoutible. Perhaps using an open field instead of a dropdown for connecting to Mastodon? I only wish the best for Spoutible and you. Peace.

Mastodon's API is pretty open with much of it compliant to the ActivityPub protocol.

Finally, there are plenty of other social media platforms and services that allow the user to connect with their Mastodon server/instance. What Spoutible has provided is a good first step but we need the follow-through.

Most Mastodon servers are set up to represent a community...many of them not well represented or well protected in mainstream social media.

No not really. Addressing on Bluesky and Mastodon work similar to email addressing. By only allowing only for a couple servers, the equivalent would be requiring your email only to have a .gmail.com domain to be accepted in the Spoutible community.

Yes, my workplace was a Netscape Communicator user for our enterprise browsing and email. I headed a national team to migrate to Firefox and Thunderbird. Sort of laugh now how detailed the instructions had to be given to the field back then to install the software and make the switch.

I hope Spoutible eventually supports all of Mastodon. If not, might as well remove the feature as you're likely to upset more Mastodon users than please. For example, I'm on Medium's Mastodon instance and Spoutible's claim it connects to Mastodon is irrelevant to me. @bryanruby " target="_blank" class="inline-link">https://me.dm/ @bryanruby

Thanks for putting up this list. Adding to your good comments that there is no "official" Mastodon server, I'd also add that the quantity of users on a server really doesn't matter because it's all part of the #fediverse . Limiting servers is just going to upset more Mastodon users than it pleases.

I'm a heavy SiriusXM listener but with plans to drop my subscription to go with a blend of AM/FM and Android Auto (News and Music Streaming). I suspect this all depends on whether you enjoy music, news, or podcasts on your way to work.

There definitely is a lack of "meanness" here that I appreciate. It's one of the reasons Spoutible is one of the few platforms I'm willing to support financially. https://donorbox.org/bot-s...
