i've heard that happens to a lot of people, actually! especially if they start with a sparse first draft. me, my first draft was basically the book as-is (just upwards of 128K words) and my revisions consist mainly of tightening things up. different strokes for different people, i guess. 🤷‍♀️

hispanic immigrants are some of the most conservative people in this hemisphere. if you think they can't be racist or they can't think themselves superior to other ethnic groups, think again.

and stop looking for excuses. it's the guns. whoever the shooter is, it's the guns. [5/5]

but convincing yourself that you are "white" (as defined by these foreign countries) can also lead to convincing yourself you are superior.

many hispanic immigrants to the US look down on undocumented migrants because they "didn't do it the right way." [4/5]

and outside my country, it took some mental adjustment to realize i didn't count as white anymore.

i've gotten some racist microaggressions in my life, though nowhere near the level a hispanic person with darker skin would. [3/5]

why can hispanic people so easily fall into white supremacy? when they get to places like the US and europe, "passing" is a survival mechanism. i say this as someone who can pass. in my country, i'm white. [2/5]

because they need to save face when confronted with the obvious. they're not dumb. they should be able to do two things at once, if that's what it takes. they should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. and if they can't, they shouldn't be your elected officials. [8/8]

not 100%-- some people still slip through the cracks and cause tragedies-- but less people will have died in the end.

same principle with gun deaths. so why insist that it should be one option or the other, but not both? [7/8]

because taking away the IMMEDIATE solution, and waiting for them to overcome their alcoholism might take too long, or perhaps never happen. both need to happen, and both SHOULD happen, but only one saves people THAT DAY. [6/8]

one such event happened just this weekend.) well, if an alcoholic drives a car under the influence, there are laws that can take away their access to a car before they can hurt someone else-- be it by revoking their license, by towing their car, etc depending on the location. [5/8]

so if you want to avoid these horrific murderous events in the short term, the best option is to deal with the guns.

they love talking about cars, and how you can also kill people with cars yet no one's trying to take away people's cars. (yes, we know. [4/8]

they should be able to understand that IF mental health is a factor (and i'm not sure it always is), it's a factor that can only be solved in the medium term or long term. it doesn't have an immediate solution. [3/8]

it's more than that, though. these people aren't dumb. they're executive officers, they're legislators. they know the difference between short term, medium term, and long term. [2/8]

2) bellwether by connie willis: this book so earnestly and unrepentantly loves sociology and as a science nerd, i appreciate that so much. it's just a super cute and hilarious rom-com that made me feel so much lighter. #BookRecs

1) little eyes (orig. title in spanish: kentukis) by samanta schweblin: if you're already paranoid about having cameras all around us all the time, this book will make it so, so much worse. it's so good, though! #BookRecs
