I’ve been exploring how we relate to anger. I’ve looked at insights from philosophy and psychology. This is my first post looking at insights from religion. Just in time for #Purim

You can only read the first few paragraphs of this but in those paragraphs he makes an important point. He illustrates the Republican strategy that makes them more successful than Democrats at the game of electoral politics.

ACCOUNTABILITY MATTERS.

ESPECIALLY in democratic governance.

People with power were not held accountable for their involvement in 1/6.

And here we are.

McCarthy: “I think today was a political decision by the Democrats,” he said, suggesting that they should have voted for him to preserve the institution of the House.

Expecting Democratic support for McCarthy is like expecting Republican support for Jeffries.

Three choices for R House: 1. Try to appease MAGA members (tried this one—just failed) 2. Share power with Ds. This would require serious concessions. McCarthy wasn’t willing to consider this. 3. Do nothing.

I’m guessing they’ll try for #1 again but will end up with #3 . #2 makes the most sense.

Worth watching. But if you don’t want to watch, punch line is committee Democrats raising their hands to support the rule of law while committee Republicans refuse to raise their hands to support the rule of law.

Weighing in on some of the recent discussions about men and masculinity. As is often the case, the position I take isn’t unique to me, but the way I express it is. Hope you enjoy it!

Fun Rosh HaShana fact: On the Jewish calendar, the next year starts on the first day of the seventh month. It’s like 2024 starting on July 1.

The first month (the equivalent of January) is the month containing Passover—celebrated on the 15th day of that month, coinciding with a full moon.

Pretty much all of us have weak neck muscles. Here’s a beginning to a healthier neck:
1. Place your chin on the back of your right hand. Press down with your chin and press up with your hand. Only about 5 lbs of pressure in each direction.

Apparently I am "pull a neck muscle standing up from the toilet" years old today.

Inflation is a worldwide issue. Relatively speaking, U.S. has kept inflation low while also keeping unemployment low. Though it’s hard to trumpet this as a political success (for those struggling to make ends meet, the statistics don’t matter) it is an impressive accomplishment.

Finished watching Jury Duty (available on Amazon Prime). It’s a sort of documentary—but not exactly. I loved it. The central character is faced with many ethical dilemmas, the sort we all face in our lives. I found it very uplifting. And also funny.

I remember a conversation from high school. One of the “cool” girls was complaining to me (a not “cool” guy) about the behavior of the “cool” guys towards their girlfriends. I suggested they could consider choosing better boyfriends.

I just finished listening to Barbara Kingsolver’s book “Demon Copperhead.” It was amazing. The book is narrated by its main character and the audio version made this person come alive for me. Highly recommend either print or audio. One of the best novels I’ve read recently.

Conclusion: “ …it's clear that the Instagram era of social media is over and the new era of "authentic" online sharing is emerging — just without an audience.”

This is worth reading and considering. My take: There is no rule that can be applied in every case. Sometimes “no moral compromise” is the necessary stance. And sometimes (I’ll even say usually) a bit of compromise can do a lot of good.
