Once when I was a teenager I was complaining to my mom about how this friend of grandma's always wanted to have the same boring conversation, and she said "just think about it like he's a dog wagging his tail. He has no idea how to actually connect with you but he's communicating that he's friendly and warm'. I've remembered that a lot in these situations.
