At the doctor's office to see if my Babesiosis has gone away. Another reason to be very, very wary of deer ticks.

Threads is better than X but appears to be heading the same way. Spoutible is much nicer.

This whole Bud Light thing is very amusing. Bud Light isn't even a good beer. The brand is the whole reason anyone drinks it. The bunch of MAGA folks blowing up bottles and boycotting it are never going to be a match for AB-InBev's brand power. They will succumb to it again eventually!

I have really tried keeping up with news on Twitter - there are still a lot of informative posts. But it really continues to get worse and worse.
12:49 PM - Apr 28, 2023
Just back from visiting family, including my mother who will be 94 next month. She still doesn't like Trump and his ilk ;-) Blames it all on education (i.e. lack of). She has a point.

WOW, Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle month on the Criterion Channel! (And Jayne Mansfield!)

I started reading this book about racism. My brother recommended it to me. I'm only part way through but already can recommend it to anyone. Ibram is a great writer with a strong voice, and does his research. He is slightly prone to hyperbole but because it's all backed up it's not an issue.
07:01 PM - Feb 28, 2023
Interesting to see all the Scott Adams defenders confirming their own racism in the process. Scott himself seems bent on capitalizing on the outrage. That seems to be the motivation of all of it, from Fox "News" to Trump to all the GOP/Maga performance artists to right wing radio - selling stuff
05:22 PM - Feb 28, 2023
Finally the Scott Adams plan is revealed - Dilbert will go behind a paywall and immediately sign up a bunch of right wingers (who by now are well used to getting fleeced).

It's great to live in NYC. This past week we attended 3 Broadway shows: MJ, Some Like It Hot, and Hadestown. In that order, and we thought the last was the best.

Twitter is getting worse all the time. I still check it because it's been a good source of news and quotes from politicians but I'm thinking I'll stop and just hang out here.
03:14 PM - Feb 21, 2023
Went to see MJ the Musical on Broadway last night for our Valentine's Day date. Good script, good music, good dancing, singing and acting. Some uneven numbers in the first part but after the intermission they found the groove and hit the numbers hard. Definitely can recommend.

Why from the media reports today about the State of the Union address do we get the full drama of the GOP response but almost nothing about Biden's vision for the country and defense of democracy?

Pretty much what we are seeing tonight

Such a great speech by Biden. Terrible response from Republicans in the chamber. Seriously bad response from Sarah Huckabee Sanders. What is wrong with these people? Hate is the only response to common sense?

BTW Twitter is really terrible and getting worse daily. The more Musk tweets the worse it gets.

A post of mine on LinkedIn about simplfying microservices using Domain Driven Design has gotten about 3,700 impressions. Sharing it here:

Listening to Brian Eno's "Foreverandevernomore." Mostly ambient with some singing. I think I own almost everything he ever did ;-) This is the latest release. Great stuff.

Those of you who already follow Heather Cox Richardson already know this, but she is amazing at putting current events into historical context. Here's one from Feb 3 for example - contrasting the pro and anti-govt factions:

For tech today - I have been re-reading Evans's Domain Driven Design. I looked through the previews of a few more recent books on the topic, but the original is a classic for good reasons. It's about the intersection of business and tech. That's how he defines a domain.

Something else we learned at the last beer tasting (Jan 1) - Hill Farmstead and Alchemist are not kidding when they ask you to keep the cans cold. We tasted Heady Topper side by side, one kept cold, the other not. Same for Society and Solitude. We could taste the difference. Hop flavor fell off.

Last week at this time I was preparing to leave Colombo, Sri Lanka after a two-week stay. The sunset cooperated to make it a memorable departure night. I find myself liking Sri Lanka more and more the more I visit.

I recently canceled NYT and WaPo subscriptions - I just could not continue endorsing the 90% junk they write. As a longtime fan of both and former journalist I used to hold both in high esteem. But they seem to have fallen prey to the $ influencing crowd.

Great to be on this new platform, and kudos to Chris for doing something about the destruction of the old platform. In getting this going I'm following back anyone who follows me.

Ok, I posted once about beer, and once about tech. Today is a music post. My brother, Tor, wrote and recorded a song called "Better Way" to try and do his part to improve things:

I wrote this blog post a while back about microservices - so many posts miss the first principles, i.e. the frequent failure of consumer grade HW components and the techniques to tolerate it.

What everyone gets wrong about microservices | Eric Newcomer's Blog
Martin Fowler has collected a lot of good information about microservices, but does not understand their origin as the "right size" unit of work for commodity data center infrastructure. This is apparent from his advice to start with a monolith and decompose it, as if the target deployment..

At the last beer tasting (Jan 1) we learned that the barrel aged version isn't always better. Examples: Hill Farmstead saison Flora not better than Florence; Counter Weight imperial stout Barrel Aged Behemoth not better than regular Behemoth. All great beers but barrel not always better.
