In another life I was a film score composer, songwriter and studio musician, then I realized that I enjoyed making music much more when I didn't have to earn my living from it. This is the only pop song I ever had recorded by a major artist. Released in 1980. It's about 3 minutes too long.

Not a natural athlete, I quickly figured out that in most amateur sports, especially youth sports, few people are willing to sustain more than about 85% effort, so I could win if I put out 95% to 100% effort. The down side is injuries. Looking back I wish I had been more willing to accept a loss.

I'm as nervous about the upcoming election as the next guy, but I've never wavered from my conviction that Biden will win. I'm well aware of how much irrationality there is in the US, but after what we've been through, I'd have to believe in mass insanity to conclude Trump will get elected again.

This is a golden opportunity for investment firms to offer index funds that don't invest in weapons manufacturing or foreign governments. Those type of investments are totally unnecessary for generating high growth, but it requires brokerages to get off their asses and figure it out.

My experience at Santa Rita after being arrested at a protest 50+ years ago was any defiance was met with absolute brutality and humiliation. The guards prevented us from sleeping for 3 days, beat us severely without cause, denied us food, water and bathrooms. We stumbled out of there like zombies.

Had to record a Porsche being driven into the ground, ie. gear grinds, skids, bottoming out, etc. Producer arranged for 911 and driver. He trashes the 911 and I get it all on tape. Turns out he's a mechanic and a client left the 911 with him to be fixed. Told me he could get a Maserati if I wanted.

I'm recording a lead actress who hates director, so he's not supposed to show up, but he's hiding under the console telling me what directions to give her. She gets suspicious, stomps into the control room, sees him on the floor and starts throwing danishes and bagels from the food tray at him.

Director wants to slowly build the music, he'll tap my shoulder to cue a slam fade into silence. I'm building, building, he's going "Wait for it, wait for it" then he screams "Now!" and pushes me hard on both shoulders. I fall forward, all the faders go to max volume, lead mixer yells "Lunchtime!"

We were about to master a big action movie mixed at another studio. Panicked assistant runs in, "Gotta make everything louder or director will never work with you again." We play their mix as-is, the logo pops on (lightning hitting a tree) and it blows all our massive new subwoofers. They walked.

The actress/director was playing her mother and had to replace some dialog. She walks in with her uniformed chauffeur who is carrying a small round trampoline, conga drum and Igloo full of energy drinks. Tried to tell her not to bounce and drum while we record her lines. She said figure out a way.

For birth scene she stops the session and demands I build a gyno table complete with stirrups so the actress can method act, which I do. Director is all up in her crotch pretending to be a doctor.

The director left for a meeting. The producer tells the editor to change the music. The director returns, we screen the scene and he goes ballistic on the editor, who leaves in a huff. The producer says (with us witnesses present), "I told him it was a bad idea." The director smiled because he knew.

I worked on the show "Transparent" for two seasons. It may seem ironic to some (not me), but I found the trans people I worked for and with to be some of the more "normal" personalities I came into contact with in the industry. That's more a statement about Hollywood than trans people.

Georgia passed a bill that requires jails to work with federal authorities to identify and deport undocumented immigrants. Regardless of how one feels about migrants, this is a dumb idea that many states have abandoned because it disincentivizes cooperation with police, thus increasing crime.

Provoking police into over-responding is a common tactic for radicals and police are happy to oblige. Both sides get what they want and the press is thrilled, too, but I didn't any positive results from it when I was involved in protests in the 60's, except that they did sell a lot of newspapers.

You know you are watching bloodsport when the rules say you can't elbow people in the face during preliminary bouts because they might have to pull out of the tournament due to cuts and then you won't be able to elbow them in the face in the finals, where it is legal.

Hollywood has always paid lip service to racial equality, but when it came to hiring never followed through until fairly recently. One exception was Todd AO. They not only hired POC, they actively sought them out, and it paid off financially, too. Doing the right thing is good for business.
