Answers range the complete spectrum. Anecdotes abound with dire warnings or confident reassurances. Real numbers are in short supply but opinions are endless.

I realize that asking an AI to make what are essentially caricatures of non-white folks is - to put it mildly - fraught. So I'm betting there's a thumb on the scale here somewhere.

There's stuff like Tasmota which doesn't require cloud services, and that might be the move for nerds but isn't scalable for non-nerds.

It's cheap enough that most folks don't think twice about pitching it when it no longer works, and the more expensive ones don't seem to offer much advantage (even branded ones could do this sort of thing through subcontracting / outsourcing).

I'd wager the play is.

1) Flash generic 'smart' hardware with semi-custom firmware.
2) Release barely customized app to control it. Require cloud service.
3) Siphon every bit of data possible from the end user.
4) Close up shop. Vanish into the void.

Back of the envelope calculation means that in order to charge that battery from dead to full you'd need roughly ten times the wattage of an average home's service capacity. Not impossible, but A LOT.

I know this is a really small thing to be peeved about in the larger scheme of things, but they've had several months and it's ok to admit you got one wrong, especially if you're essentially a single-issue organization and that was the issue at hand.

Like, the only conceivable reasons for this is that they think I need to sell quickly and that I couldn't possibly get at least double what they're asking. Neither of those things are true.

It's eight acres, and there's a similar lot on the other side of the freeway that got subdivided and built up with houses. It's possible they waited to see how that would work out before pricing this.

About an hour of work (mostly searching for how to transmogrify a video link to a single shot link for various brands of camera) and it's working well enough again to submit a patch to jwz with an updated e-mail link.

The tail of this article pulls the punch by complaining about "identity politics" at its peril. Bodily autonomy and equality and equity for all go hand-in-hand with solid public education. It's inseparable.

And the process of unwrapping that algorithm is explicitly creating that data structure in your code; which is why it ends up being easier to understand. It's now visible what you're keeping track of.

Anyway, on some level I knew this already, just not in a formal way.

And I realized that the main reason recursive algorithms look so dang _elegant_ and _concise_ is that the data structure you're building to keep track of where you are in the calculation is essentially hidden from you because it's in the operating system function calling stack.
