People in America act as if we can simply jump from thing to thing and the rest of the world follows along with our narrative. It doesn't work that way. While we squabble over Gaza and barely retain a thought for Ukraine, Sudan is still enmeshed in civil war and Syrians are still being bombed.

The conflict in Gaza has made clear the fault lines in our nation. You have people protesting the genocide of Palestinians at the hands of the IDF being called "antisemitic" and being treated as if they are terrorists. You have Jewish people watching a ramping up of antisemitic attacks.

Final thought: I'm glad Thompson doesn't see a silver bullet but a web. Still, I keep wondering if we are asking the wrong question. We might be happier if we pursued something other than happiness. I wrote a bit ago about this--and the tendency to make happiness, like so much else, a competition.

Certain other places: white schools, Black churches, media, patriarchal Black men, work—encouraged the exact opposite! Young adulthood for me, and I imagine many other Black girls, was learning how to retain or find my own authentic voice and trajectory while avoiding failure and rejection.
