I love the premise of this video/challenge. Give a drummer the song without the drums, and see if they can "feel" what the drums should be for that song!

in the last few years #3bodyproblem has been the best book-to-series adaptation, even if they created some new /extra characters for TV. Still captured what made the book work.

Though the book was even better at the "humanity cannot be saved" villain perspective.

So well written, and full of useful things to remember about people that dominate the news but don't actually know what they're doing.

Naked Shorting: When investors sell stock without actually borrowing or buying the shares.
Results in a surplus of shares.
Drives the price down.
Contributed to 1929 crash.
Illegal but still happens some today.

[This seems super harmful to markets]

From a survey of 48,000 Africans in 34 countries in 2022:
"In your opinion, which of the following countries would be the best model for the future development of your country?"

USA 33.3%
China 22.5%
South Africa 10.7%
Our former colonizers 10.2%
Don't know 7.8%
Ourselves 7%

It's offical:

"The report revealed that large market participants accelerated and distorted the negative effects associated with supply chain disruptions and used rising costs as an opportunity to further raise prices to increase their profits, which remain elevated today."

WOW. This 2023 survey of belonging in the US shows that NOT belonging is one of the things that makes people the most angry about national politics.

Starting today (and for the next week) Ramadan, Lent, and the Bahai fast all overlap.

The Bahai fast is pretty much like Ramadan, but 19 days instead of 28.

"You won't be replaced by AI, you'll be replaced by someone who knows how to use AI"

One of the more insightful comments from our ongoing global survey of nonprofit's thoughts about #AI .

I think this is a very useful mindset to approach change.

"In 2010, a theory began circulating on the internet explaining faulty memories that seem to affect many people. That year, Fiona Broome, a self-proclaimed paranormal consultant, explained that she remembered perfectly how Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s.

A good word to add to our lexicon - folk who'd rather make election day a holiday than worry about the decline of our holy GDP.

Ever heard of a donor advised fund (DAF)?

Report out on DAF trends:

The vast majority of DAFs in this study (81%) were opened after 2010, and over one in four DAFs in
the dataset were opened after 2020.

English needs new words to capture important nuance in 2024:

misinformation -- wrong information that spreads to people, either by accident or be design

disinformation / disinforming -- people who are willfully misled by those who broadcast information... for a purpose

and "disinformants"

This is one of the hallmark questions that splits people in the USA along the liberal-conservative political spectrum. But did you anticipate that the progressive left would be the ones who most strongly believe they have little agency?

A feeling of agency leads to successful activism

Amazon apparently wanted to make it harder to cancel Prime.

So they allegedly added a complex cancellation process to confuse consumers.

Now the FTC is suing Amazon for scamming millions.

Good.

This is what it looks like when government works on behalf of the people.

From #AI #LLM paper:
"When we say that LLMs produce human-like responses, we should always keep in mind that the humans in questions are Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic. Or, in order words, WEIRD."

academia is probably 30 years away from this, but combining with python gives you the best overall performance and ease of iteration / innovation.

Why do academic researchers still stick with R? I hope their students are learning newer tools.
