Writers—do you have a favorite metaphor, like one you use every single day cos it says what you need to say better than anything? Between the song and the film, never a day goes by I don’t think of pulling a ship over a mountain. Fitzcarraldo, man.

I am the kind of anxious, restless, and desperate for change that if a stoned wizard and thirteen dwarves showed up at my door I would have no hesitation to go steal something from a dragon with them.

Needing to drive across Salem on Friday the 13th for meds from the vet is a HARROWING experience, even at 9:30 in the morning.

It's not that I don't travel well or like to travel it's that I normally sleep 4-5 hours a night but it's a VERY SPECIFIC 4-5 hours so traveling completely f*cks me up and I spend a lot of time sitting alone at 2 a.m. in hotel rooms.

Been trying for months to figure out how to stop my neighbor's windows from melting my house and it has come to my attention there are nine-foot-tall inflatable lawn dragons that would look AMAZING peering out from that side of the house for Halloween that might just become permanent

"My superpower is if I get extremely invested in a character, that character WILL inevitably die tragically."
"Do you think this might have anything to do with the fact you fully admit you have always had a low-key death wish so you identify with doomed characters?"
"...sh*t."

Love when a character you create surprises you years later. Thinking about the joy of dancing (and how I have none), and how in the Indestructibles, the Dancer stops performing when all joy has left her life. Her entire arc is making sure that never happens to anyone else.

I am not a violent person, but bulleted lists misbehaving in a document make me question that stance.

I'll be joining moderator Sara Sheckells and fellow panelists Petrea Burchard and Stephanie Willing for a Salem LitFest panel on authors who narrate this weekend, 9/10 at 11 a.m. EST. Wanted to give this some love on this site. Virtual and free!

Seeing all the "writers don't deserve a living wage" still happening and I just blurted out to myself "ENTERTAINING PEOPLE IS IN FACT A SERVICE" and I feel like I need to put that on a coffee mug or something.

Talking to another writer this morning about how there are two types of writers:
A) I use every tool known to humanity to help organize and inspire my writing
B) I need a deadline and a no-frills word processing program
(Both valid. I'm B)

Chatting with someone who should know better and... Teaching multiple generations that only STEM matters and the humanities is a waste of time is a mistake humanity will never recover from. A lack of empathy might be the thing that wipes us out before climate change does.

Thanks... I guess?

One of my absolute favorite things to do as an author is hook up literary events with awesome writers I've been on panels with in the past. Nothing makes me happier than connecting those lines.

This was a very pleasant email to start the weekend with. (I never thought I was eligible, TBH, applied a few weeks ago when I saw I met the requirements. Feels nice to be included in an organization like this.)

Been ping-ponging around all the social and I find Spoutible to be a great refuge for writers/authors, specifically. The gaming stuff I work on seems to be picking up on Bsky. Tumblr is haunted, but in a good way (?). Mastodon I can't get anywhere. I kinda like the segmentation a lil bit.

Ran the first session of our Nine Hells meets Regency game last night and I wanted the NPC list to read like the dramatis personae of a drunken Shakespeare knockoff with a dash or Pratchett-esque playfulness and I think I got it. Cast list in the follow up:

I have so much work to do, but the sky is thundering, I'm struggling to breathe, and I have a D&D game to make up silly NPC names for, so my attention is... meandering. Kinda want to sit outside in the rain and daydream.
10:01 AM - Aug 18, 2023
Pitched a D&D game as the nine hells meets Downton Abbey and now we have rich goblin spinster sisters, a table knocker, dark Oliver Twist, a kenku butler and a home schooled cleric. This is going to be a DMing nightmare and I’m here for it.

Had a long convo the other night about how many companies we'd worked for that committed suicide by venture capitalist and started wondering why business schools aren't teaching how to not get f*cked by VCs, but then I realized they're teaching how to BE the vulture.

I think I actually need to go to King Richard's Faire this year. New Dungeon Crawlers is in the works and the series has always used prop weapons I personally own in the cover art and I'm all out, so clearly buying a sword at a ren faire is a BUSINESS EXPENSE
09:46 AM - Aug 10, 2023
I'm always a little moody after working a few conventions back to back. They train my entire social battery to zero, but they're also the time I feel most fully and personally engaged with readers. I wish I could do this more often. (So much work, but so rewarding.)
09:35 AM - Aug 10, 2023
I'm at Terrificon all weekend with a new book and new audiobook to promote, and as is tradition I'm giving away a ebook novelette all weekend: an Indestructibles prequel, "The Monsters We Make."
