Does substack empower you? Does it give you control over your writing in a new model of journalism?! oooorrrrr…is it just kind of the same neoliberal hellhole as ever?
If you aren't biting the hand that feeds you, why even write?

well, let's see if I can get banned here.
social media sites should be aggressive about protecting sex workers and adult content. it's a progressive imperative. I focus on substack here, but spoutible's decision to strongly limit adult content and target critics of that policy is wrong. https://n

Wrote about substack notes taking over the world!
(well, not quite yet. Other social networks, and maybe even twitter, should be worried though.)

I've been experimenting with substack notes and I think it's probably the best choice for me for now for what I laughingly refer to as my business.

and finally! wrote about Jeff Vandermeer's reissued debut, Veniss Underground, which shows how weird he was to start and also how he's gotten significantly weirder. https://www.latimes.com/en...
10:18 AM - Apr 11, 2023
also! wrote about camp and Imitation of Life, and how surfaces are both fake and extremely powerful in shaping who we are and how we're treated. https://noahberlatsky.subs...

Wrote about Kelly Reichardt's Showing Up, a movie about not much happening, which urges you to pay attention. https://www.splicetoday.co...

lost an opportunity because I asked a bunch of questions before I was willing to sign a contract.
but if they weren't willing to answer questions, how much of an opportunity was it?
enough to make me somewhat bitter at least...

I wrote about the worry that film has abandoned sex. the MCU is weirdly sexless for sure, but...there's more open discussion/representation of LGBT people in film than ever before, an entire realm of sexual identity and experience that used to be verboten.https://noahberlatsky.subs...

reviewed One True Loves, a rom com which...isnt' really a rom com. there are laugh lines, but it's more just a romance, about grief and figuring out who you are after grief. I liked it a lot. https://chicagoreader.com/...

got to write about the kind of fantastic Korean assassin drama Kill Boksoon. Some parallels with EEAO, since it's about a mom's relationship with her queer daughter. I think I like it better though. https://www.splicetoday.co...

News is being made right now inside the Tennessee State House where people (mostly young people) have mobbed the hallways, are lying on the floor, shouting, chanting and refusing to leave. It appears as though the State Police, who line the hallways, may be called in to removed the people. YES!!

Best used poetry section in Chicago - Chicago Reader
Myopic Books in Wicker Park has a ton of poetry on offer, but the prices aren’t that much better than you could find new. The late, lamented Bookman’s Corner in Lakeview sold books so cheap it made it feel like you were stealing them—but there weren’t that many poetry books to steal. Between those e..

At Parker Molloy's substack I talked about the myth that cis gay and lesbian people are being pushed to be trans. I talked to trans youth, medical professionals and parents, and they all agreed: this myth is pernicious nonsense. https://www.readtpa.com/p/...
