22 Feb 1906 - This beautiful ship is the British transport ship SS Speke. It was the 2nd largest sailing ship of her time. On voyage from Peru to Melbourne, Australia via Sydney Heads, she ran aground at Phillip Island due to navigation errors by its Captain.

Feb 21, 1945 - During the Battle of Iwo Jima, USS Saratoga was attacked by a squadron of 6 Japanese kamikaze aircraft, causing much damage. 90 minutes later 3 more kamikazes attacked, with two of them striking the ship. The attacks killed 123 men, wounded 192, and destroyed 36 aircraft.

Did you know a WW1 German U-Boat is at the bottom of Lake Michigan? After the German surrender, some of the captured German U-Boats were brought to the U.S. on a tour to raise money for Liberty Bonds. The UC-97 was sailed down the St. Lawrence River to the Great Lakes, stopping at numerous ports.

The White Star vessel SS Naronic was built by Harland & Wolff of Belfast in 1892. On 11 Feb 1893 she left Liverpool for New York carrying a cargo of cattle and general goods, 60 crew and 14 passengers. On or around 19 Feb, Naronic was lost and was never seen again.

16 Feb 1814 - The US frigate Constitution captured the British ship Susannah, despite the War of 1812 ending 6 weeks earlier. The news was slow to reach ships at sea. Pictured here is the Constitution's defeat of HMS Guerrière in 1812.

9 Feb 1923 - The German schooner Adolf Vinnen was wrecked on her maiden from Kiel to Barry. A strong gale forced her aground at Green Lane Cove, Cornwall, ironically just under the Lloyds Signal Station. The crew of 24 made it ashore safely.

31 Jan 1917 - Germany resumes unrestricted U-Boat warfare, prompting the US to cease diplomatic relations with Germany. 3 days later the American cargo ship Housatonic was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat. 4 more US merchant vessels were sunk in March.

23 Jan 1910 - The 6 masted schooner Mertie B. Crowley was on voyage from Newport News, Virginia to Boston carrying a cargo of coal, Capt William Haskell, his wife Ida, and 13 crew. Haskell was mistaken about their position and ran aground at Wasque Shoal off Martha's Vineyard.

20 Jan 1921 - British submarine HMS K-5 was en route from Torbay to Spain, along with 4 other K-class subs and cruiser HMS Inconstant. The convoy staged a mock battle in the Bay of Biscay, and K-5 signalled she was diving, but never resurfaced after the exercises were complete.

18 Jan 1874 - The British barque Minnehaha was in the final leg of a 14 month voyage from South America to Falmouth, carrying a cargo of guano and a crew of 19. Caught in a northwest gale off the Isles of Scilly at 3am, Capt Jones ordered a new course but the channel pilot reversed that order.

13 Jan 1959 - The Panamanian tanker Mirador (bottom) was transferring fuel to a lighter at Iskenderun Harbour, Turkey, when the lighter exploded, killing 1 crewman on the lighter and 4 on the Mirador. The fire was subdued, and the Turkish tug SS Imroz (top) arrived to tow the Mirador to port.

Jan 12, 1910 - The American vessel SS Czarina left Coos Bay, Oregon with 24 crew, 1 passenger, and a cargo of cement, coal, and timber bound for San Francisco. She immediately experienced problems, and became grounded at nearby South Spit.

On 4 Jan 1995, the Hong Kong based MV You Xiu (top) and Maltese MV Paris (bottom) suffered the same tragic fate. Both ships were anchored offshore Constanta Harbour, Romania during a violent storm. Both ships drifted in the strong winds, lost propulsion, and slammed into the harbour's breakwater.

The Mary Celeste was probably the most famous "ghost ship" in history after being found abandoned and adrift near the Azores in 1872 with no obvious signs of distress. On January 3 1885, she was wrecked off the coast of Haiti, and all crew evacuated safely.

On New Year's Day 2017, the Indonesian ferry Zahro Express suddenly caught fire while on voyage from Muara Angke to Tidung Island carrying 221 people. The ship burned out of control, killing 24 people. An investigation determined the fire was caused by an overheated generator.

On 31 Dec 1948 the #Norwegian yacht Thalassa capsized and sank quickly near Spain as it was traveling to the Galapagos Islands. 12 passengers and crew were drowned and only 10 yr old Arnhild Utheim, who lost her entire family, survived. She returned 70 yrs later to the site.

The City of New York was originally a Norwegian sailing vessel named the Samson. She infamously is best known for running away from the sinking RMS Titanic, as she was illegally fishing at the time. She was later acquired by Admiral Byrd for Antarctic exploration.

The SS Montrose was a passenger liner and cargo ship, most famous for the capture of murderer Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen, and his mistress Ether LeNeve in 1910. The Montrose broke free of her moorings on 28 Dec 1914, drifted away and grounded at Goodwin Sands and broke up.

Between 21 and 22 December, 1894, at least 46 vessels were lost during the great storm over Europe. Pictured here is the sailing vessel Kirkmichael which slammed against a breakwater at Holyhead and sank, while trying to shelter from the storm. 7 of its 18 crew perished.
