23 May 1918: HMS Moldavia was carrying 900 US troops from Halifax to London when it was hit by a torpedo from German UB-57 in the English Channel. The troops and crew were transferred to its destroyer escorts, but 65 troops were killed in the explosion.

17 May 1865: British vessel RMS Athens was anchored at Table Bay, South Africa, preparing for a voyage to Mauritius. During the Great Gale of 1865, her anchors failed and Capt David Smith tried to sail to open sea to avoid the rocks.

12 May 1901: The British ocean liner Hermes was on voyage from Argentina to Cape Town with passengers, cargo and lifestock. She was wrecked during a strong gale on Milnerton Beach, Table Bay. Heavy surf made rescue efforts difficult and 2 female passengers in a lifeboat drowned.

1 May, 1907: The British oil tanker Silverlip caught fire and exploded in the Bay of Biscay, while on voyage from Singapore to the Isle of Wight. Multiple explosions rocked the ship and the fire quickly spread. 5 of the 53 crew were killed with survivors picked up by the vessel Westgate.

Apr 18 1920 - The American cargo vessel William O'Brien was bound for Rotterdam from Philadelphia loaded with coal. She reported leaks in heavy weather 500 miles from Philadelphia. British vessels Baltic and Minniekahda responded but found only debris.

Apr 16, 1947-The cargo ship Grandcamp, carrying a load of ammonium nitrate, exploded while docked at Texas City, Texas. An adjacent ship, the High Flyer, was carrying ammonium nitrate and sulfur, and it caught fire and exploded the next day. 600 people were killed.

Apr 13 2021 - The lift-boat (floating crane) Seacor Power capsized in the Gulf of Mexico 8 miles off the coast of Louisiana. 6 survivors were rescued by USCG ships and civilian vessels. The Coast Guard called off the search for survivors 6 days later. 13 crew members were lost.

11 Apr 1886 - The New Zealand SS Taiaroa was on voyage from Wellington to Lyttelton when she grounded near Waipapa Point. Its 29 crew and 21 passengers boarded 4 lifeboats, which all capsized in rough seas. Despite being close to shore, 36 out of 50 perished.

Apr 10, 1963 - The US Navy lost the nuclear submarine USS Thresher during diving tests east of Cape Cod. The submarine sank with all 129 on board. The Thresher was found in in 8500 feet of water in 1964, but no bodies were recovered. It is believed flooding in the engine room caused its sinking.

The Dutch pasenger & cargo ship PRINS MAURITS was on voyage from New York to the West Indies when she encountered a hurricane. She went down on April 3 1915, about 90 miles from Cape Hatteras. Forty-nine people perished.

RMS Windsor Castle was built in 1922 for Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company and used as a troopship during WW2. On 23 Mar 1943 she was struck by an aerial torpedo and sunk off the coast of Algiers. Despite carrying 3000 troops, only 1 life was lost.

March 22 , 2006 - The Canadian passenger and vehicle ferry Queen of the North was on voyage from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, British Columbia when she failed to make a proper course change and ran aground. The vessel sank in 1400 feet of water. Two of the 101 on board were never found.

The SS Jebba, originally named the Albertville, was en route from West Africa to Whitchurch on 18 March 1907 when it veered off course in dense fog near Plymouth, with 79 passengers, 76 crew and a cargo of ivory, rubber, palm oil, pineapples, bananas, the Royal Mail, and animals.
