What I'm reading: The Haitians: A Decolonial History by Jean Casimir.
It's very hard to explain how different history reads when you aren't reading from the place of those who wrote history from the perspective of their colonial empires.

Diri blan ak sòs pwa nan.
White rice with black bean sauce.
It's incredible - the mix of flavors in the beans and bean sauce is complex and layered.

Bought a small lemon tree for indoors. I'm hoping I'll be able to keep it alive in the winter. It's supposed to be a dwarf version.

Today's meal: Smoked turkey necks and greens.
Simmered the necks in a mix of spices, a whole chopped onion, garlic powder, and celery because no bell pepper!
Removed them after four hours to let them cool.
Washed and chopped the kale and added it to the broth, then added the meat.

#Duolingo is not my primary method of learning Haitian Creole. It sometimes uses old-fashioned vocabulary or word spellings. But it is still useful to keep me practicing every day, and I've been using it since March 2022.

a love should come

this late,

Jodi a m te chwazi tomat mwen yo nan jaden an. Ti yo rele "tomat seriz" paske yo tèlman piti yo sanble seriz.
Yo gou!
Today I picked my tomatoes from my garden. The small ones are called "cherry tomatoes" because they are so small they look like cherries.
They are delicious!

Making #pikliz
This time I used a food processor and not the mandolin slicer or the knife.
Much much faster and a lot fewer uncuttable chunks or wounds to my fingers!

Not gonna let some punkass Florida governor try to expunge Black people, Black culture, and Black history.

Happy Mother's Day, mom.
You were a kick while you were here. Feisty, stubborn, loud, trying to get as much out of life as you could.
And when you passed, you were surrounded by your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
You were loved and are missed.

I made #pikliz trying to follow a recipe but was hindered by a few things:
* I can't slice evenly so I used a mandolin.
* I don't have all the ingredients
* I don't like to chew peppercorns
* I don't have glass jars
But SO pleased with the taste.
(Pikliz should be sliced about 1/4" wide.)

“Haiti has fascinated people for more than 200 years. As the first Black republic it has represented self-achievement and self-dignity to the nations of the world who have groaned under the boot of colonialism...”

I've been a follower of Jesus of Nazareth for 55+ years, seeing him as someone who liked to be with people pushed to the margins or whose backs were against the wall.
I'm still the same person as back then, and I'm still saddened at how people who claim to know Jesus hate the people he loves.

Rather than seek to deny the humanity of gay people and trans people, what about using your religion to help you decide to know more about them so that you can love them better?

My first Haitian Creole novel. It's midlevel Creole, which is above my skill level, but it's a challenge and I'm going to try to make it through.
