#Duolingo is not my primary method of learning Haitian Creole. It sometimes uses old-fashioned vocabulary or word spellings. But it is still useful to keep me practicing every day, and I've been using it since March 2022.

What if, after years
of trial,
a love should come
and lay a hand upon you
and say,
this late,
*your life is not a crime*.

Jodi a m te chwazi tomat mwen yo nan jaden an. Ti yo rele "tomat seriz" paske yo tèlman piti yo sanble seriz.

Yo gou!

Today I picked my tomatoes from my garden. The small ones are called "cherry tomatoes" because they are so small they look like cherries.

They are delicious!

This is right at my reading level. I was able to pick it up and just start reading it w/o a glossary or dictionary. The few words I'm not familiar with are understandable through context.

Very good choice for my next steps in learning the language!

Making #pikliz

This time I used a food processor and not the mandolin slicer or the knife.

Much much faster and a lot fewer uncuttable chunks or wounds to my fingers!

Happy Mother's Day, mom.

You were a kick while you were here. Feisty, stubborn, loud, trying to get as much out of life as you could.

And when you passed, you were surrounded by your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

You were loved and are missed.

I made #pikliz trying to follow a recipe but was hindered by a few things:

* I can't slice evenly so I used a mandolin.
* I don't have all the ingredients
* I don't like to chew peppercorns
* I don't have glass jars

But SO pleased with the taste.

(Pikliz should be sliced about 1/4" wide.)

I've been a follower of Jesus of Nazareth for 55+ years, seeing him as someone who liked to be with people pushed to the margins or whose backs were against the wall.

I'm still the same person as back then, and I'm still saddened at how people who claim to know Jesus hate the people he loves.

Rather than seek to deny the humanity of gay people and trans people, what about using your religion to help you decide to know more about them so that you can love them better?

Well, here we go...

My first Haitian Creole novel. It's midlevel Creole, which is above my skill level, but it's a challenge and I'm going to try to make it through.

Also today, but from yesterday.

Back in October of 2022 I pulled out a patch of tansy ragwort (Jacobaea vulgaris), a nasty, poisonous weed that can seriously harm or even kill animals that eat it. Following protocol, I bagged the entire plant and threw it in the trash.

(This is not my image.)

Today was a yard work day.

I live in the mountains of the PNW. It's February, but not too cold.

The winter storms *always* leave piles of fallen tree branches .

I spend a few weekends every year cleaning them up.

Today I worked for an hour filling a 56-gallon bin.

I'm only halfway done.
