Watching “Gunsmoke” with Mom. INSP has a merch shop that lets you declare your fandom: Team Chester or Team Festus. If they offered them in a slightly larger size, I’d order a Chester shirt… or maybe I’d get both “so’s I can be contrary.”

I’m no fan of W.Va. AG Morrisey. He’s a Trump-humping MAGA chud and he’s been on the wrong side of just about every social issue. Today I saw some virulently transphobic ads calling him a pro-trans liberal. If you want to say he’ll sell out any position for personal gain, fine, but show some class.

I had to read a couple first chapters to choose a new book, which ended up being Denis Lehane’s MYSTIC RIVER. I saw maybe five minutes of the movie years ago, so I don’t know much about the story. Interesting so far. #books

The kids are watching Yo Gabba Gabba. The little monster dudes are playing pirates and the cyclops yelled “My turn to wear the eye patch!” and it’s the first time this show has made me laugh.

I finished reading C.J. Box’s “Open Season.” That was a solid debut, and I like that the main character is a game warden. It’s a nice bookend to Nevada Barr’s series about park ranger Anna Pigeon. I already have the second novel reserved on the Libby app. #books

Watching Joe Lieberman running a hearing on video games and describing an innocuous piece of Sega-CD camp like “Night Trap” as being about killing women — you SAVE women — was my first realization that sometimes the people making our laws don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

I caught the bug Mom and the kids have been passing around and was completely wiped out yesterday. I mostly slept and didn’t even read anything. I’m feeling better today and back to reading C.J. Box’s “Open Season.” I think I’m going to like this series.

I finished Cormac McCarthy’s “No Country for Old Men,” which was just as good as the movie. Mom made potato soup, so I’m eating a bowl of it and we’re watching “Wagon Train.”

It must be some kind of J.R.R. Tolkien-related anniversary, because the digital editions of most of his works are on sale today. The one-volume THE LORD OF THE RINGS is $3. Must be something in the air because I fell asleep listening to DVD extras from the Peter Jackson films. #books

After watching the movie with Mom and being reminded of how good it is, I started reading Cormac McCarthy’s NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. Storywise, I think the only difference is Tommy Lee Jones takes his wife to the crime scene and Josh Brolin doesn’t shoot a pursuing dog. #books

Bob Chipman launched a new video essay series called “This Movie Exists” and what a way to start it. The guy behind “High School Musical” and a ton of Disney family films also made a bunch of semi-porno grindhouse flicks in the 1970s.

I finished reading Essa Hansen’s NOPHEK GLOSS. It’s the sort of space opera I should’ve been eating up with a spoon, but it didn’t quite grab me that hard. It’s the book equivalent of “I love you but I’m not *in love* with you.” Maybe I’m not ready for love so soon after Wheel of Time. #books

Svengoolie is showing the Dan Curtis version of Dracula with Jack Palance as everyone’s favorite bloodthirsty count. I’m impressed at how faithful it is to the novel, which is one of my all-time favorite books.

Has anyone read the Joe Pickett novels by C.J. Box? I skimmed the Libby app for mysteries and the first book in the series was available for checkout. I might add it to my list of things to read on vacation. #books

I’m officially on vacation. Going to Mom’s tomorrow to spend a week hanging out with the family and slowly replacing my bloodstream with lemonade. I want to finish Essa Hansen’s NOPHEK GLOSS and a big chunk of Ken Follett’s THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH. Beyond that? We’ll see.

My dad used to buy wild ginseng found around the southern coalfields. Then he’d dry it and sell it to someone else for more.

When I stepped on the bus this morning, the driver said “I’ve got you. Just grab a seat.” I thanked her. She likely did it because she was late and about thirty seconds from having to pull out of the depot, but a free fare is a free fare. No complaints here.

I’m about 20% of the way through the audiobook of Ken Follett’s THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH. I can see why it’s so popular. The setting is fascinating and I’m invested in the characters. #books

Reading about all the great additions to the PC version of Stardew Valley. When that update lands on Switch, I'm going to end up starting an entirely new farm. That game is my comfort food, and now there's more of it to enjoy.

Practical vs. Digital… I just watched an episode of “The A-Team” where a guy reached out of a moving helicopter and yanked a woman off a jet ski. That stunt from the 1980s managed to be more thrilling to me than some big-budget superhero spectacles I could name.

Hilarious. One of the congressional candidates accidentally sent out a concession e-mail, followed by a "DISREGARD CONCESSION!" email, followed by a "Okay, here's what happened" email. They drafted win and loss versions and accidentally sent one out instead of hitting "Save Draft."

Today is the Ohio Primary, which means I have an earlier deadline so our Ohio paper can print later with the results. More importantly, it means election night pizza in the newsroom. It’s an important tradition. 🍕

Gonna take a break from listening to Dan Simmons’ SUMMER OF NIGHT because the Libby app notified me my hold on Ken Follett’s THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH audiobook was available. I’m not sure I’ll be able to listen to the entire thing, but I have it on Kindle and could use it as a jump start. #books
