A difficult truth game preservationists need to swallow is that in order to convince the video game industry to start taking preservation seriously you need to get the general public to start caring about it first.

The point is that game companies need to be able to see there is monetary value in making their legacy content accessible to the public. It also doesn't help that a large part of the average gaming public generally sees video games as disposable.

Another thing to consider is that the general public largely isn't interested in playing games from the past they would generally prefer newer games that fit more in line with their modern expectations.

It's also difficult to justify backwards compatibility if only a small fraction of players end up actually using it as stated by Jim Ryan here.

The general public preferring newer titles that fit in more with modern expectations is also a big reason why video games are much more subject to the remake treatment even more so than films.

Remakes offer a number of advantages of a straight up rerelease chief among them being a greater audience reach since you can easily market it as a new title and the opportunity to go back and address issues with the original.

Of course at the end of the day a lot of it comes down to ROI and whether remaking a game would be considered more profitable than just rereleasing the original or making a completely new title from the ground up.

It's generally important to consider that video games are still a relatively young medium and haven't quite reached the same level of acceptance in mainstream culture as film and television which goes back to my previous point.

Bottom line, things aren't really going to get better for game preservation until the public becomes convinced that video games are in fact worth preserving on the same level of films.

In response to Gabe Hoffman.
Sadly, this will never happen; @DigitalEclipse did a great job of this with Atari 50, but it's a drop in the bucket against proprietary platforms, store shutdowns, the ESA, and online games.

Emulators/piracy, for better/worse, will probably be the only complete solution for the foreseeable future.
