Former El Toro marine base located near Irvine, CA, which closed almost 25 years ago, is now being transformed into the largest city park in the U.S.

The park will span 1,300 acres and include museums, an amphitheater, a veterans memorial garden, an aquatics center, a sports complex, and two lakes.

It was supposed to be a nature corridor not this overly commercial mess.

This spout was removed because the account associated with it was suspended.

It would be really interesting to save this aerial view and compare it 10 ten years from now.

How many units for unhoused people?

Sadly, zero. I suspect homeless will camp here anyway. The park is in affluent Orange County. Local homeowners will fight against anything that threatens their home values. Any suggestion that this or other resources be used to house the homeless or disadvantaged is met with fierce backlash here.

There are a few projects there. Doria MHSA Housing in Irvine CA is one. It’s been there since 2019?

Red States should stop projecting their rubbish on everyone they hate and be grateful for the financial support they garner from blue states.

They should hope that California will never rebel and ostracize them from being recipients of their financial benevolence.

Red States stop annihilating.

Also, Cal State Fullerton’s Oral History department has collected a whole bunch of histories of people who lived and worked on the base, or nearby.

I have only one memory from youth: sitting on blanket laid over uncomfortable dried grass to watch Blue Angel air show w my Dad and older brothers.

I wonder if some of that history will be moved to a museum at the Great Park. Seems like it would be appropriate.

I remember when the marine base used to host the Blue Angels. They still fly here at nearby Huntington Beach.

I went to two solar decathlon events there. It’s a competition among colleges and universities to design & build solar-powered houses. The 2-years long process concludes with transporting the house-parts to the final build site (old runway) , building, judging, & exhibition.

Considering the OC’s attitude towards public space, etc, this is absolutely stunning and wonderful news. I remember them wanting to turn that base into a major airport.

I remember that as well. It was a long drawn out battle to get this approved. Honestly, I’m shocked they're not turning it into more housing.

I do, too! One of my fave places is Balboa Park in San Diego, and it sounds like the new Great Park will rival that by far. Bonus...it’s located less than 2 miles from me.
