A business plan that probably should be investigated further is the "cheap no-name 'smart' device with its own specific app and cloud service". There seem to be literally dozens of them, all selling the hardware at or below cost, and the names of the players are constantly changing.

I'd wager the play is.

1) Flash generic 'smart' hardware with semi-custom firmware.
2) Release barely customized app to control it. Require cloud service.
3) Siphon every bit of data possible from the end user.
4) Close up shop. Vanish into the void.

It's cheap enough that most folks don't think twice about pitching it when it no longer works, and the more expensive ones don't seem to offer much advantage (even branded ones could do this sort of thing through subcontracting / outsourcing).
