For my birthday, I got myself Ted Gioia's History of Jazz, and I can't read it very fast because I have to take a moment to sit with it and contemplate all the American history that was ignored when I was brought up. 19th century American music was Stephen Foster, and that's it. Argh. And ugh.

I read somewhere that there are only 2 uniquely American art forms: Native American art and Jazz.
It tickled me that neither came from whites.
