To mark Black History month in Canada, I’m spouting about a Canadian hero. In 1946, Viola Desmond refused to sit in the segregated area of a movie theatre, and instead sat in the area assigned to white people. She was arrested. 77 years later, she’s the face on our $10 bill.

She also went to beauty school in Montreal, opened a series of salons in Halifax where she served and employed Black women. She opened her own Beauty school for Black women who she then employed at her salons. She created her own beauty products sold exclusively at salons owned by her grads.
