some compensation for its use by others

Sure. You can copyright the *code*. But if the code creates a plagiarism machine, you can鈥檛 copyright the product.

If you invent a better kind of crowbar, you get to keep the patent. If you use that crowbar to rob a bank, you don鈥檛 get to keep the money.

And in the case of OpenAI, they *are* being compensated. Users pay to use their software. That doesn鈥檛 mean they get to copyright the plagiarized output.
