The Michael Rosato mural of Harriet Tubman on the exterior of a building in Cambridge, MD is one of the most compelling works of public art ever. You have to be there in person to fully grasp how the trompe l'oeil style pulls you into the painting and the moment.

This is a mural of Harriet Tubman, reaching out her right hand to help you into a rowboat for escape across the river. It is painted on a red brick building, and the painting makes it look like bricks have been removed from the wall on the left side. Harriet dominates the right side, holding onto a brick column with her left hand. She is wearing a dark grey skirt with black boots, a light grey blouse with a scarf knotted around her neck and a red patterned scarf wrapped around her head. Behind her on the left are bushes and bare trees. Behind her on the right is the waiting rowboat and an expanse of river with the far shore behind. The blue sky of the painting blends into the actual blue sky behind the building on which the mural is painted.

I sat on the ground and cried. Couldn't even think about leaving until I had gone and put my hand on her palm. I can scarcely imagine the feelings she stirs among black people and all who don't feel fully free. What look like the extended fingers are the artist matching a feature around the corner.
