I was compelled to create something like this after working in Africa (Accra, Ghana) on a project and visiting The Door of No Return — ifykyk #Africa #blackmusicproject #BlackHistoryMonth #banjo #Bluegrass #music

This was great! Learning to play clawhammer banjo was my pandemic hobby, after hearing Songs of our Native Daughters and going down a serious rabbithole. So I had read the basics of this through obsessive googling, but you set it all out so clearly and compellingly. Really fine work!

Thank you for watching and commenting! Good luck w the banjo! I nearly bought one last week while working in San Diego. I contemplated visiting Deering Banjos just for a "look-see." But I knew if I walked in, I'd buy one & have yet 1 more hobby I would never conquer (still working on guitar lol).

Thanks for sharing this. I had not seen a thorough accounting of the roots of the banjo done in this way. I am going to look into this some more.

Thank you for taking the time to watch it! My site, The Black Music Project, goes over the banjo's history, eras, genres, and a growing list of artists that helped shape America's cultural identity. Please check it out and let us know what you think!
