Everyone doesn't have time to read long threads, so next week, Spoutible will be the first microblogging platform to offer AI-generated summaries for threads. At Spoutible, we do more with less, and we are just getting started. Watch this space...

One of the best things in the platform formerly known as Twitter is/was the summaries of news stories from people I trust. Even better are summaries by the author.

A bit wary about this. Even AI will have a perceived "point of view" just because nothing human can ever be 100% neutral. (AI is created by humans). Bias is in the mind of the reader as well as the author.

The community here should be proud of everything Spoutible has accomplished so fast and with no techbro billionaire involvement. That said, I see AI as a dangerous and destructive technology. It isn't going away, but that needs to be used VERY sparingly. AI-anything makes me immediately steer clear.

#No

It supplants the author. I might be more inclined to accept this if the author has the ability to edit your summary, delete the summary, or perhaps turn off summaries as a feature on their timeline for threaded spouts. For real-time court reporting threads, it's problematic, too.

I love this idea! I have cognitive problems and very often, it's difficult for me to stay focused for a long thread. Bookmarking helps because I can keep going back to it and read a little at a time, but it loses its impact.

As a technical person, I am curious to know if this AI for summaries was built entirely (or mostly) in house or was it built from an existing framework/technology?

Why read a thread if you can skim a thumbnail summary.

The first post in a thread doesn't always describe the full content and depth of a comment. The summary could help you decide if you want to bookmark it and read it later. You could also avoid any triggers that are in the thread.

I like this!!! I often do not have the time to wade through long threads, this will at least give me a summary, so I can choose to bookmark the thread to read in it's entirety later!

As I wrote in my quote spout, how about also offering the option of a summary written by the thread's author rather than AI?
Also, we should be able to opt out of Spoutible having AI summarized any of our threads.

I hope clearly labeled as such. I have little interest in the machine like effect of ai in previously interesting prose I've seen to date, so I would probably avoid it.

If a writer's words are learned by the algorithm, what assurances are there that the author's original thoughts and words won't get plagiarized into a summary of a different thread on a similar topic?

This is a battle I'm fighting: competitors using copy scraped & paraphrased from my website by AI.

Umm, holy cow...idk. Won't we lose the author's voice? 🤔 🤯 People could also write shorter threads; nobody should require a 75-spout thread. (That said, hot damn, @cbouzy comes up with something novel every day!!) 🤓

Cool! I wonder how the AI summary feature will fare with collaborative threads. A generic "the author" and "they" won't fly then. 😈
