1 / 2 i grew up trailer trash in a small PA town. Lot of kids I grew up to ended up to be asshats, racist, red hat wearing fascists. I ended up, well, a lot more to the left.

2/2 Only thing I can see different is I left the church and read a shit ton of books. They still go to church and watch TV.
I'm still that kid from Lot 13, I had it pretty shitty, but I know others folks have had it a lot worse. And I will stand with those folks every time. Peace out.

Good for you. My experience is similar but not quite to the degree you describe. And the difference is 100% down to leaving church.
