There are three spouts I posted that I am bookmarking for reference to bring back up periodically:

1. The "All elections are important" spout
2. The "Suppose 100 people vote" spout
3. The "Goals for 2024 election" spout

Let me explain why these three political posts are important to me.

Days ago, I posted "All elections are important" because I am scared and tired of people who think it's a hassle to vote when they don't feel enthusiasm for candidates.

Politics isn't supposed to be entertainment. It's about deciding who will lead the government that is connected to our lives.

If you love candidates who are great, certainly vote for them.

If the choice is between a mediocre but stable candidate and one who will clearly make things worse, you should still vote for the former just to avoid the horrors of the latter.

Votes are not love letters. They are hiring decisions.

There are people who don't want to vote because their lives aren't affected by politics. It's selfish thinking, because chances are that the lives of people are affected by politics.

Voting is about human lives, not just one's own but also the lives of people we know and everyone else's too.

I posted the "Suppose 100 people vote" spout because the 2016 election shows that if the good candidate doesn't actually get enough votes, the undeserving candidate who should lose with fewer votes will win because that number of votes suddenly becomes the bigger one, just by lowering the other one.

In elections, focus on the difference in votes received.

In my example, 52 Democratic votes and 48 GOP votes means the Dems lead by four. One Dem voter person deciding not to vote results in the differential going down from four to three, even without voting GOP.

Again, look at vote differential.

The impact of one person's vote goes like this:

Vote for Candidate A -> Vote differential changes by 1, in Candidate A's favor

Changing mind about voting for A -> Vote differential for A is now 1 less than actually voting for A

Voting for Candidate B instead -> Another 1-point change away from A

I posted the "Goals for 2024 election" because too many people still don't realize that laws are created by the House and Senate of Congress and then become official when the President signs them. All participants in that process need to be on board with serving the interests of the American people.

If two parties in power both care about Americans, they can surely work together.

But if one party cares about people and the other really does not, you gotta be realistic by giving the former a chance to control the House, Senate, and presidency. Otherwise, obstructionism hurts everyone.

The Senate may have 51 Democrats, but Joe Manchin and Kyrstem Sinema are clearly against abolishing or limiting the filibuster. In essence, the Senate has virtually 49 Democrats.

But if Ruben Gallego wins and replaces Sinema, and no Dem seats are lost, 49 becomes 50, enough for the nuclear option.

With that, I will periodically quote-spout these three political spouts of mine, to bring them backup while providing additional commentary. I will do so on the first Tuesday of each month from December 2023 to October 2024, then more frequently until Election Day itself. So don't mind me, OK? 🙂
