Trump is one of the least masculine, least adult people in public life. Needy, whiny, defensive, pleading, scared of women, and terrified of more powerful men.

I’m at a loss about why Trump’s supporters see him as manly or strong. 🤷🏻‍♀️

He's white. They're whit or white-adjacent. They NEED to see him as masculine and capable when he is anything but.

I've been told by people who like him that his "strength" comes from speaking his mind.

One can speak his mind and not act like a horse's ass, but you know Trump. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Trump supporters don’t care if he’s manly or strong. His followers admire him because he legitimizes their hate.

It’s because of their suffering. We all seek refuge because we all suffer. He offers the most powerful form of refuge known - community. It’s based on grievance, rooted in despair, but to many that community provides validation that they can find nowhere else.

Of course many people are involved with MAGA for the same reason Trump is, money. In fact one could argue that the particular flavor of despair driving this movement is a desired outcome of our peculiar way of doing things…I.e. hypercapitalism, financialization, social fragmentation, etc.

Arrested development. A huge cross-section of adult (mostly white) men are basically 14 year-old boys. Trump is a foolish boy's idea of a powerful man.

I might say that they, like a great many people, falsely equate bullying with strength, rather than a mask for pitiful insecurity.

Also his supporters are often similarly weak and spiteful people, and by pretending he is strong, they pretend that they are strong.

They've been told he's masculine & strong, and not to believe anything except what they're told. Even not the things they see with their own eyes.
It's quite sad.

I'm at a loss to see him as strong, also as a smart businessman, good for the economy, or good for foreign policy.

The fact is, Americans have become blind to reality in favor of a fake reality star. The fame-obsessed-TV-brained electorate of Being There moment has arrived.

I've wondered too for a long time for the same reason.

I think it's because they admire that he is able to flaunt his worst traits, which they share but hide. From that boldness, they see him as courageous and unafraid.

Ultimately it's an admission.

He speaks the right(wing) code while promising to hurt the people his base have been taught to hate, and hurting people to get ahead fits their Strong Leader model.

Toxic masculinity is a dangerously twisted abomination of real masculinity.

White supremacy is a foundational tool of the patriarchy.
