Unexpected reorg at my job and now I'm in a new department. Anyhow when introductions were going around, I realized I was one of the only people who doesn't have a PhD. Nor did I even major in computer science. I'm the only one that's self taught in the room.

I guess I should be proud of that.

You should be very proud! I was also the only self taught person in my former company’s IT department. It took a lot of work and brain power!

I agree--you should!

My bestie is a self-taught software engineer. ADHD made college impossible for her. She's had a very good career, first at Microsoft, now at Amazon.

Street smarts are a beneficial addition to book smarts. Actual versus virtual. Stay strong 💪

Congratulations 🎊🎉🎈. Much respect for people with degrees but the fact that you have the discipline and self guidance to achieve this quite the achievement

Absolutely. I as well. We should be damned proud. For so long I felt like I was a ‘fake’ and was dumbfounded that I have made it this far. It’s now over 30 yrs and I am officially proud.

According to my friends in finance, many PhDs are very good at analysis, but poor at presenting evidence to the sales team.

You should!! Many PhD's I worked with were smart, but got very academic in their thinking- analysis paralysis. Sometimes you need someone who can just fix shit and get the job done. You belong and will contribute greatly to your new unit.

In high school, I was "Engineer for a Day" and got to spend the day at a local engineering firm. The only thing I remember about it was being told that in engineering, "you go to college to learn how to learn how to do your job." As long as you can do that, you don't need the degree.

You probably have way more skills too. I have found that self-taught people tend to find more creative solutions to issues

I know what you mean... I'm generally the only one who didn't go to art school in a group of visual artists... my degree was in theatre and communications... which links back to visual art...

You absolutely should be very proud. I was the same in my career. I got a BFA is Ceramic Art, but my career in software was as far removed from anything I knew. I taught myself multiple programming languages, networking and hardware. I was surrounded by tech guys with computer science degrees daily.
