🧵It was surreal standing at the foot of the Edmund Pettus bridge (named for a KKK leader)in 2015, on the night of the 50th anniversary of Selma. My photographer and I arrived in Selma hot on the heels of a hero we followed from St.Louis. She was a 90-year-old nun who could outrun the best of ‘em 1/

I was there for 50th the next day (on Sunday; Obama there on Sat). 70,000 people there on Sat and 80,000 people there in Sunday. Worked with Lewis’s sister-in-law but went to Selma with UU contingent. Also was in Montgomery for arrival of marchers for last 1/2 mile. Moving. Every minute was moving.

Republicans are passing state voter suppression laws, an extremist Supreme Court has chipped away at the Voting Rights Act, and Republicans in Congress continue to block voting rights legislation.

From her divine perch, I can hear Sister Antona Ebo saying, the struggle is never over. /fin

John Lewis would be making lots of Good Trouble right about now. I know he expects us to!

She told me as we walked to the bridge together, the struggle is never over.

Sister Antona Ebo died in 2017.

Today is the 58th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

2023 feels like 1963. 6/

50 years to the day she marched on those streets, Sister Ebo walked me down memory lane on the streets of Selma. That day she watched the first Black president hugging her friend John Lewis, steps from where troopers almost killed him. She got to shake President Obama’s hand that day. 5/

Sister Ebo flew to Selma to answer Dr. King’s call to march for the right to vote. The March 11th cover of The New York Times featured a photo of Sister Ebo marching alongside other protesters. It became an iconic image of the struggle for voting rights.4/

50 years earlier, ordinary Americans with extraordinary courage like Sister Ebo and her friend John Lewis decided they wouldn’t let anybody turn them ‘round. They marched for the right to vote in the face of the sheer brutality of white troopers who beat and bloodied Black peaceful protestors 3/

We woke up to a cool day flooded in the light of brilliant sunshine. Outside of my hotel window, on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday morning I heard, “Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round”. 2/
