I'm all about alt text because Spoutible is all about inclusion.

But, I woke up this morning thinking about my favorite great aunt, Cioci Ann. I swear I can hear her saying, "Tell them about me, Bethy."

I only knew Cioci Ann as legally blind. And most people would never know. She didn't let it stop her from doing much of anything. She made kielbasa and pierogi by hand. Taught me how to make kruschicki and apple pie.

I remember how cool it was that The Society of the Blind sent her records so she could listen to books. I wonder what she would make of all of the new tech today: having the newspaper read to you by a hand-held computer!

A limitation, however, of current screen readers is the inability to handle images. I'm hoping AI will help with that in the future and become ubiquitous.

But, until that happens, those using screen readers need your help. Entering alt text gives a screen reader something to read to its user. Alt text should be used for all images as well as gifs.

Worried about what to write?
Hints:
1. Quick description. No need to write a book. Think: line under a photo in a newspaper
2. Describe only the important details. Every color of every follower in a bouquet is unnecessary, unless that is the point of the picture.

3. If you describe the image in the text of your spout, you don't need to duplicate it in the alt text box.

The more you practice, the easier it will be. And you'll make my Cioci Ann smile up there on her cloud.

I’ve been making an effort to use alt text in my posts. It’s easy when you make it a habit.

I'm new and cannot figure out how to do alt text and can find no tutorial. Could you explain how it works?

After you see your pic has loaded, tap the blue ALT, it will open a text box for you to type a description.

I have been enlightened by AltText. I was aware but never used it until recently. Now, for many of the reasons you described here, I have fully embraced AltText. If you can help many others with minimal effort, then why not do it? #TeamAltText

Thanks. I often add ‘bonus content’ in the alt-text.
