Oh - that's the best scene in "Gentlemen's Agreement" the 1947 film about anti-Semitism. Cathy is sitting with her fiancé's Jewish buddy and insisting she's not bigoted because of how offended at an anti-Jewish joke she got. "But what did you say, Cathy?" Of course she'd been silent.

Yes, and not only if someone who is the target of the joke is in the room. For example , I have had someone interrupt a joke about Jews saying “Andrea’s Jewish.” That’s not it, and leads to stupid apologies. It’s bad no matter who’s in the room.
