calling all birders-we have a muddy pond where turtles & frogs live. ducks & geese check it out in spring but don’t stay to nest. this morning i saw a super bright white bodied bird with an all black head & a long pointy beak. i immediately thought “loon!” but i can’t find any waterbird with that

the bill & size are correct but i can’t find a pure white merganser in my books. maybe it’s a genetic outlier?

coloration in my bird books or on line. i don’t have a photo, because i don’t have a zoom camera & i was looking through a screen which muddles photos. i’m 80 miles north of nyc. any identification thoughts?

mallard size but more compact, if that makes sense. smooth looking & less feathery than a mallard.
