Dart has been very sick. He was diagnosed w/ kidney disease in mid March & put on a special diet, but wasn't doing well. He threw up several times this past weekend & seemed more lethargic than usual. On Monday, Lara took him to the vet. They said we needed to take him to a vet hospital immediately.

Kidney disease shows up in blood test mostly in creatinine and BUN (blood urea nitrogen) levels. A normal level for creatinine is under 1.4 mg/dL and BUN is 7 to 27 mg/dL (this can sometimes be level 1 kidney disease, depending on other factors. 1.4 to 2.0 mg/dL creatinine suggests stage 2.

Between 2.1 and 5 mg/dL is Stage 3, and above 5.0 mg/dL is stage 4.

His creatinine was at 7.0 mg/dL and his BUN was at 109 mg/dL.

Every morning, the vet would call with updated info on blood tests. We came to visit him every night.

Monday night he seemed alert, if uncomfortable (we brought his bed and a towel to sleep on in the kennel/cage). He was on an IV saline drip, plus antibiotics for an undetermined infection.

The tests results on Tuesday morning were 8.9 mg/dL & 111 mg/dL. When we came to see him, he wouldn't wake up. Lara lifted his head & said his name right into his face to get him to respond. I asked if he'd been sedated (he hadn't).

We had brought one of his favorite toys to leave with him & left thinking we were going to hear even worse news the next day.

HOWEVER! On Wednesday morning, his results were MUCH better, at 5.1 mg/dL and 86 mg/dL. When we visited, he was alert & ate some dehydrated liver treats we brought for him (with an OK from the vet). They brought him into a room out of the kennel to visit with us.

We couldn't stop petting him & telling him what a good boy he was. We stayed about an hour. They told us if the next day was better, we might be able to take him home on Thursday.

Thursday mornings' results were 3.4 mg/dL and 55 mg/dL. We elected to let him stay one more day to make sure it wasn't a fluke. That night when we came to see him, he stood up in the kennel and gave us a few wags. We brought some sweet potato and some steak (the vet said "unhealthy food > no food").

The results this morning were slightly better than yesterday, at 3.3 mg/dL and 45 mg/dL. We came in to bring him home. When they brought him into the room, he wagged at us.

He's on a few drugs: Enrofloxacin (antibiotic), Maropitant (nausea/poor appetite), and Entyce (appetite stimulant). He's also got a saline IV that Lara will need to inject him with daily (100 ml). She did a test injection at the vet with instructions.

We had to give him a bath as soon as he got home, because the antibiotics have been playing hell on his digestive system and he had some poop stuck to his butt feathers.

But, he is home!
